By the time he got his troops to the riverbank across from Trenton in the cold December Pennsylvania snow, he desperately needed a victory over the British. His men were poorly fed and clothed, many had no shoes and wrapped strips of cloth around their bleeding feet trying to keep them warm and functional. Loss of mobility of the foot soldier spelled doom. Yet they continued on and Washington got that much needed victory for the morale of the fledgling country.
As I watch the Senate and the House come back to Washington I think about the General and the comparison between our legislators and this brave man who went on to be our first President is striking. The comparison is not a good one for Congress and I'm particularly struck by the lack of backbone and even knowledge of the Constitution on the part of Republicans. I wouldn't expect the Democrats to understand because they've been trying to destroy the Constitution for years, but the Republicans should know better. After all just two weeks ago they said if they were elected we would have our voice heard in Washington. From the pathetic way they're already talking about how they will take on a lawless President, it is clear that they will actually do little or nothing at all.
And that's where John Doe comes in. Who is John Doe? He's you and me, the average American who pays his taxes, follows the rules and tries to do what's right but can't understand the reluctance of our elected officials to time and time again promise us things and then not deliver. He can also be Jane Doe as well. We know that something is dreadfully wrong. We watch a lawless President mock and scorn America and we just recently showed our disgust by using the ballot box to voice our displeasure, yet Obama came out talking as if he won. He clearly ridiculed the Republicans and they just sat there and took it.
I truly believe they just think we're stupid. They think they can make grandiose statements to appease us and then they never follow through. Once they get back into the stench of Washington it's business as usual again. And I guess we deserve it, for we've allowed them to get away with it for a long time and they are just playing the odds. But it's different now, the country has never had a Chief Executive who wantonly violated the Constitution and belittled the very people who elected him. It is clear that the American people are being used as pawns while he destroys the American way of life, for that's exactly what his fundamental transformation of America is all about.
This country is worth saving, folks, but if we sit back and wait for the politicians to do what is right it will soon be over. They have no stomach for doing the heavy lifting and fighting against tyranny. It's just all talk and no action. The time for action is now. Speak out loudly, get involved, write letters and make phone calls. Tell your representatives that their behavior is woefully inadequate and unacceptable. We John and Jane Does have the power if we speak up and use it. If we don't we'll just continue to be the means of paying for their folly. Is that what you want for your children?
