In his remarks to the press following the hour long meeting he said there were five issues that both leaders could agree on. These included ending illegal immigration, establishing a strong border, dismantling the drug cartels, improving NAFTA to make it fairer between both nations and keeping manufacturing wealth in our own hemisphere. This last point could be seen by some as reneging on his work for Americans first but I think that could be a stretch. Trump has made it clear that he wants Americans needing work working again and beyond that it makes sense to have stronger relations with our direct neighbors.
The only issue that the press is "pinging" on is Trump's comments that they had not breached the issue of who would pay for the construction of a border wall with President Pena quiet during the joint meeting but tweeting later that Mexico would definitely not pay for it. Of course, the press doesn't tell you that the Mexican President is under some negative pressure from his countrymen for even meeting with Trump in the first place. That the meeting was held is a credit to both men for both men to realize having good relations is a step in the right direction for the future.
So what do the Democrats and in particular Hillary Clinton have to say about Trump's travel? Well, predictably, she criticized him for making the trip stating that he can't undo the damage of his tongue with one trip. Really, Hillary, do you think that Trump thinks he can accomplish all that he wants during a first meeting with a man who is skeptical of America and about whom America is skeptical as well? And besides, Hillary, what are you doing yourself other than spouting platitudes and conducting minimal campaigning due to your "condition" which everyone knows is real yet no one knows what it really is?
Advantage Trump. Congratulations on a good first step and the commitment to take on the tough issues, not hide behind your staff on everything. Trump has shown he is a leader, not another candidate who casts a pall of unending bureaucratic control over his fellow citizens. This campaign is just starting to get good, folks. Stay with it to the end.
