Before walking into the barn, I stop at the fence on the east side of the property, coffee in hand, and look out toward the stand of tall pines and silently watch the sky. Sometimes it's crystal clear. Sometimes it's fully overcast. And at other times, it is just like the picture which was the way it was this morning. From a dark gray, to a lighter shade of that color, it soon started showing deep purple which would slowly change toward orange and then yellow. And the shadows began to creep backward toward the treeline as it brightened. It was gorgeous and it is one of those things I never grow tired of seeing. And while it was not nearly as dramatic as watching the sun rise from the sea, the golden rays soon began to shine through openings in the pines and add their own touch of glory.
As I turned to slowly walk into the barn and get the feed buckets ready for the horses, I listened to the sounds about me. A couple of owls were talking back and forth with their "whoo, whoo" calls. The rooster began to crow, the horses nickered when they saw the barn lights come on from the pasture and the big dogs panted, yearning for their food as well after a long night of farm guard duty. Finally, the barn cats came into the barn, meowing and telling me they were hungry after a long night of mouse patrol.
Later, with the horses now in their stalls and munching and crunching, I went and got a second cup of coffee and waited for them to finish. And I thought to myself that I was a very lucky man to be married to a "Horse Lady." Having been a beach boy and a city one as well, the introduction to life in rural America completely changed the way I look at things. With it came a newfound appreciation for the love an grace of God which gave me such a vantage point for viewing life, active life as it takes place out here in the piney woods. I wouldn't change it for anything and it has also given me the motivation to write as I now do routinely. How can you not write about real life, nature and her animals and all the many splendors God has provided in such a place? I don't know about others, but there is no way I could sit with my computer turned off after the things I witness each and every day. And I believe I am doing just what God wants me to do. I hope the rest of you are living a life that provides so much splendor as well. It makes every day a wonderful day to wake up in His world.
