Mayor Emanuel made news this week when asked about his response to President-Elect Trump's vow to end sanctuary cities, of which Chicago is one. Emanuel replied emphatically that Chicago would always be a sanctuary city, that undocumented citizens (meaning: illegals) would continue to be welcomed with safety and security and care. The city that today is nearing four thousand shooting in just this year alone, much more closely resembling Baghdad than America. And the projected cost of paying the bills for all of these added services, including the education system, are pushing the city closer to financial insolvency.
So Emanuel has decided to "play hardball" with Donald Trump, assuming that Trump will back off his plans to eliminate sanctuary cities. Bad move, Rahm. Not only will Trump stand by his position but he is likely to withdraw federal financial support to the Windy City since you have decided not to follow federal law. There are major consequences for what you do. With one billion dollars at stake, you would be wise to stand down and live up to your obligations as a lawful mayor. After all, Mr. Mayor, you are broke, your schools are a living disaster area teaching nothing and your streets are a killing zone.
Is Emanuel delusional, stupid or both. No, he is arrogant, continuing to operate in the fashion he was noted for while on the White House staff. The only difference, Rahm, is there is a new sheriff in the White House and his name is Donald Trump. The days of selective enforcement of the law is over; consider yourself so warned.
