This past week I was somewhat surprised but very appreciative to hear a strong voice of support come for him from the front man for KISS, Gene Simmons. I say somewhat surprised because when I think about it this support really isn't all that surprising after all. Simmons is a master of marketing for his group but he also is totally fearless when it comes to supporting the kinds of things which make capitalism, freedom and America great. He acknowledges that religious freedom and the ability to express one's faith openly is an American right that must be protected.
I also want to point out just a couple of points that Simmons made which are so clear and undeniable. He gave examples of two other athletes who have been or are in serious trouble yet have been handled with "kid gloves". They chose to go after Tebow for his belief in God instead.
The first, Michael Vick, was found guilty of running a dog fighting ring which as a minimum violated our standards regarding cruelty to animals. Now I'm all for forgiving Vick if he has truly "seen the light" but to minimize his bad behavior and constantly beat the drums that it was because of his upbringing is ridiculous. At some point, men are men and the responsibility for their actions is not something to be excused because of poor parenting.
And then there is Aaron Hernandez, the street thug turned alleged murderer who was glorified by both the Florida Gators and the New England England Patriots for years despite the evidence now coming out that there was at least some evidence of his evil doings early on. He is awaiting trial for murder and is being investigated for other possible murders and other illegal actions.
Simmons looked at both of these men in his remarks and said that they avoided excoriation by the media unlike Tebow. And why, you might ask? Well, the KISS leader said it was because of Tebow's unabashed love of Jesus Christ and I think he hit it right on the head. You see, our media, even our sports media, has a major bias against Christianity. They are just another example of the godless culture that gets so much support today despite the evidence that a majority of Americans still consider themselves to be Christian. And Tebow is such a big target for them because try as they might they can't find anything with which they can bring him down. They even used the anti-Christian fervor to bring down one of their own sportscasters, Craig James, who refused to deny his belief while with ESPN. I guess ESPN has never heard of free speech, although had James been a Muslim I'm sure there would have been no issue.
Shame on the media but kudos to Gene Simmons for speaking the truth from his heart. And God bless Tim Tebow for always standing for the real Truth. He is a solid young man, standing on his faith and The Rock which is Jesus Christ. He is secure in himself and will be a wonderful success at whatever he does with the rest of his life. If it happens not to be football, then the sport will be the loser.
Christians, look at this young man as a fine example for our youth. We don't need to glorify athletes, rock stars, and Hollywood types. Neither do we need to worship politicians who will always falter through their own weakness. We need to glorify God, plain and simple, for He and His Son will lead us to the real Promised Land.
God bless you, Gene Simmons, for telling it like it is about a fine young man. The Truth shall set you free.
