The relationship between God and the Devil is an interesting one. After all, God banished the Devil, Satan, the Serpent or Dragon, whatever you want to call him to earth where he was given free reign to try and sell his wares of destruction to anyone who wanted to buy them. And what did they use to set the price? The price of their soul. We know that the Devil had been an angel, an angel who wouldn't fall in line with God's task, one who was more interested in himself than his mission from God, so he was banished from heaven, hence another name used for him, the Fallen Angel. He has been around all this time and one of the most interesting stories in the Bible about him is none other than the story of Job, a devout man who Satan was allowed to torment in whatever way he wanted so long as he didn't end his life. Satan, indeed, destroyed everything that God had given Job, his riches, his home, his family and he even convinced Job's friends that he had done something horribly wrong to merit such treatment. Yet through it all, Job would never blaspheme God. He wouldn't take that final step that Satan sought and, in the end, his riches and life were restored. God let Satan do these things because it was all part of His plan, a plan involving the free will that each of us has, including Job and God won the day with Job and Satan was once again show what a loser he is.
So, what about each of us? How does our free will fit in to the picture and what does it mean for us regarding Satan? Well, it 's really quite simple. With our free will, we are afforded the opportunity to make choices in our life, choices that will have dramatic impact on how life turns out. Foremost among those choices is the one we make regarding our relationship with the Lord. Will we put Him first in our life, living for Him or will we decide that so many of the things that seem so attactive to us and pleasurable are preferable to God? It's really just that and we are left to make up our own minds and Satan is very active in trying to insert himself into the process. He can make himself available in many different fashions, ways which make his offer very attractive in an earthly sort of way. If it's reaches you want, he can package himself as a fat bank account or a bag of gold. If it's material things, he can be that big house you've dreamed of or even a Rolls-Royce. Maybe it's power, then he can become that vacancy in political office that you have dreamed of holding or perhaps it's related to lust, in which case he can package himself as a gorgeous and desirable woman or the man of steel with the looks to go with a muscular, perfect body. It can even be a plate of food or a bottle of single malt scotch. Whatever it is, if it's what you dream of, he can become just what you want and lead you on to the path of no return he wants you to take.
But what if we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit within us and listen for his guidance. Well, then he can give you the strength to deny his evil plans and instead embark on a cause of goodness and light with the Lord being the object of your attention and commitment. In such case, while you might still suffer from a few minor setbacks, you will quickly right your course because you recognize the truth, the truth being the only true way to real life and eternity. That is the free will choice God wants all of us to make but it is only we who can make it. It's all up to us individually, no one else can pray your way or will your way to heavenly light.
So, what's it going to be? Will it be pleasurable, but decadent life on earth leading ultimately to a dead end of darkness or choosing the way of life through living as the Giver or Life wants by belief in Him by faith. Again, it's a choice that only we can make for ourselves and it will result in a final outcome that we can only reach on our own. Choose wisely, my friends. Choose God and find real and lasting life. If you do, it will never end and the wonders and glories we will be a part of will be beyond even the wildest of imaginations. Do it now and start really living today, a life of meaning, goodness and love.
