Now in a world where so many are wrapped up in their lives and the push to have more and more, most would not give this delicate little creature a second thought. But if we take the time to observe and really see what surrounds us, we can learn some valuable lessons. In the case of the butterfly, it will do whatever it can to extend its life as long as possible, despite the built in disadvantages faced. In addition to the missing wing and the fact that flying is its principal means of survival, it also is very colorful and any easily located target. It will, however, try to hide as best it can until the short lifespan ends. After all, nature is a place where survival of the fittest rules and it often does so in brutal fashion. Each of its players in the game of life understands those rules.
Contrast that little butterfly with mankind. We often think we have the answers to everything and many of us don't think they face serious consequences for what we do in our own version of the game of life. We are meant to be good social animals ourselves, supposedly being advanced to a superior level, yet we are often brutal to one another, make fun of the infirm, fail to properly raise our young and waste time on trivial matters when there are much more important things, worthwhile things we could do with our lives. Sadly, we often don't give those and other issues a second thought. If that's not enough, there is even more. Since we are given a soul and with it the ability to discern right from wrong and good from evil with the grant of free will from the One who created us in his image, why do we so often fail to make the right choices? The little butterfly had no such option and it gets even worse. We humans have the opportunity to believe in our Lord by faith and be born again to live for Eternity when this life on earth is done. Just think for a minute about that previous sentence. We have the opportunity to never die if we only follow He who gave up His precious and only Son, Jesus Christ, if only we believe in Him through faith.
So, what would that little butterfly have done if afforded that same opportunity? Why, he would have jumped at the chance in a heartbeat. And I thank Jo Seal for sending such a beautiful and thought provoking photo.
Dear Lord, Thank you for the beauty that you have given us and for granting us dominion over the earth. Help us to always use it property, in a manner which is meets your expectation of proper care you desire of us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
