All the news is abuzz about the closure of the federal government. People are gnashing their teeth, saying that some will starve, that emergency requirements will not be met and that disaster looms. And it's really not surprising that so many believe this, for all day Friday most of the networks droned on and on about the issue with clocks counting down the time to disaster, the closure at midnight.
But yesterday morning just like clockwork, the sun came up, the birds started singing, the electricity ran to keep the heat on and to fix breakfast, yet some still think we are doomed. I guess they don't realize that the government has had budgetary closures many times over the years and they are always described as insurmountable and claims abound that the stock market and the financial system will immediately crash, yet it doesn't happen.
So, why do so many of us put our hopes with mortal, fallible politicians? After all, aren't they the ones who create the problem in the first place and don't they make the same mistakes over and over again? And I get it, you can't have governance without political actions, hence politicians, but why do we think that they have the answers because they are just like us? Like it or not, they and we are all miserable sinners.
I've got a better idea. Why not put your faith in God instead? Turn your life over to him to be molded as He wants. After all, as our Creator He is omnipotent, all knowing and all seeing, and He will guide us where he wants us to go if we let him. And the result will be beyond our wildest dreams.
And as for politicians, regardless of party or view, we have to engage them to do what is right for our nation, not their own selfish desires. And we can only effectively do this if we look at the issues from the perspective of God's wisdom. If we do that, we'll clearly be able to separate the "wheat from the chaff" in what they do. And when they know that we understand what they do, be it good or bad, they will respond appropriately if they want to continue in their position.
We are God's and if we work for Him, all things are possible. There isn't a government official, appointed or elected, who can match that. Put Him to work for you today. And as for the government shutdown, just relax, Monday will come and with God's body armor to protect us, we will weather whatever storm beckons. And perhaps offering a prayer for the politicians to come to their senses fairly and honestly will offer the power for them to finally realize they are also there to do God's work for us, not their self-centered desires.
Dear Lord, We thank you for the beauty and bounty that you have bestowed upon us and we ask that you infect our political leaders with your love. Help them to do what is expected of them, find answers to problems rather than create more problems. That they can only do if they open their hearts to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
