Less than a year earlier in late September 1938, Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of Great Britain, signed the Munich Accord with Hitler, allowing him to annex the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. This followed Hitler's easy takeover of Austria and Chamberlain and the French both felt that an agreement of this type could avoid a bloody war. In their folly, they thought that Hitler would be satisfied with this arrangement.
Chamberlain returned to London from Munich, claiming victory through his negotiations and further stating that "there will be peace in our time". Yet despite his unfounded optimism, Britain found herself directly in the cross hairs of of the German war machine just a year later after the fall of Poland. A year later, London would suffer from the heavy German air blitzkreig during the Battle of Britain with huge death and destruction. It took more than a year more to pass before America was drawn into the fray directly following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Hitler's ally, the Empire of Japan.
Britain was in a weak position in 1939, her reputation as ruler of the seas was dwindling, she was woefully unprepared for war as was France, and it was only a matter of time before she would again be squared off against Germany. The Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I had literally found Germany at total fault for the first great war and this, coupled with the Great Depression left Germany open to a charismatic leader who promised that she would once again be great. The opening for Hitler, with his heady rhetoric and calls for Germanic nationalism in a world full of weak players made his rise inevitable. So he quickly reached peace agreements with the Soviets to keep them at bay and assumed America would stay out of the fray since she was also in a quite weakened state.
History has a way of repeating itself, and it seems very likely that the weakness that we in America find ourselves in today will lead to another conflagration sometime in the near future. If anyone thinks that ISIS and related Islamic terrorism groups aren't serious about establishing a Caliphate to expand their influence to a position of worldwide power, they had better read their history. Not only does early history show this tendency in the times of the Crusades, but the natural tendency of vacuums to be filled by tyrants, as in the case of Hitler in the twentieth century are very real indeed.
Sadly, America's weakness today appears to be by design as our idealistic President seems to think that America is just one of many countries, none having a greater role that the others. Our military has been cut, both in terms of manpower, material and advanced weaponry while the world around us is taking an opposite direction. A new huge vacuum in the world of military once again exists and provided an opening for tyrants everywhere. The President dithers on important national defense issues while our enemies consolidate their positions. and whether or not this signifies the beginning of the Tribulation as detailed in the scriptures or just another world power play by despotism, very real dangers are at hand.
History, such as what is represented by what happened on this date less than a century ago, does indeed repeat itself. We need to pay attention to its lessons and do so fast, for otherwise we could quickly find ourselves standing in front of the sword, only this time it could be right here at home.
Let's wake up, America, and demand that national defense be once again put on the front burner and that effort is placed on gathering intelligence on our real enemies, not patriotic American citizens. It's not too late yet but time is of the essence.
Always stand for America and may we turn again toward God for the blessings that we'll need to face the challenge. May Old Glory ever fly freely over the home of the brave.
