Yesterday at church I saw an example of just how powerful His love is as shown by His response to prayer. It involved a man in his 40's who has been ravaged by pain for years, pain which originated with a broken back suffered in an accident.
While this man recovered as well as could be expected from such a severe injury, he has always had a tremendous amount of pain. He works for a large infrastructure development company and as a field supervisor, the nature of his work requires him to be active. He handles it well but, from time to time, his zeal for perfection in what he does means that he overdoes it. On such occasions, he is reminded by pain and on occasions it debilitates him. This can mean excessive pain and numbness in his leg or a foot which puts him on bed rest for extended periods, usually taking several weeks to recover.
He recently went through such a spell, and when he was missed at church a week ago, he was added to the list of those for whom we pray for better health. Being a small country church, most of the members prayed for him routinely, asking the Father to give Him relief from his pain and suffering.
Yesterday he surprised us by showing up for services smiling and bright. He made a point during morning prayers to say that his numbness and much of his pain had receded faster than ever before in such bouts. His doctor could provide no reason why his most recent episode ended so favorably and so quickly. He just smiled when telling this to the congregation and said there was no other answer except for the power of prayer.
Now admittedly this wasn't a life or death issue and it isn't one that will make front page news, but it was a situation that temporarily set back his ability to earn a living and certainly was painful to him and saddened his family watching him suffer. So it was a big deal for him personally and those prayers did play a major part in his quick recovery. Oh, he isn't cured, there will be later times when the impact from his severe injury years ago will return, but just having the ability to live in a reasonably normal fashion with manageable pain is quite a blessing for this man and it shows that God is always listening for us and will respond with love and kindness.
Prayer is a wonderful form of communication with God and it's a way for us to express our hopes and dreams to Him in person. And he loves special requests made for others since he expects us to live with love for our fellow man as well. And if you think about it, multiplying the wishes of one by many is very powerful, for it shows us working in unison for someone else in need. God appreciates that and hears us clearly. Think of it as an individual's prayer now being heard in stereo. There truly is strength in numbers.
So for those of you who don't believe in miracles, pay attention and look around you. They aren't always grand events like the burning bush or the parting of the Red Sea, but the many miracles of life abound and we need to watch for them, for God's love burns brightly and it is always working. Let it work for and within you as well.
Have a great start to a new week and remember to hold a conversation with Him daily. He want to hear from you. God bless.
