"Ike" was the man who had to make the final decision on the time and date that the Normandy D-Day invasion would be initiated. He also had the unenviable task of managing and controlling the egos of Allied Power generals to insure that harmony kept the natural competition of various personalities under control. This was critical to our success in ridding the world of Hitler's maniacal reign of terror.
Dwight Eisenhower was the first President that I felt as if I knew. I remember his steady hand, quietly leading the nation in a fatherly way while America dealt with the Russian menace. But the Soviet government respected him, for he had earned that through his service in World War II in days that were dark for much of he world. They knew of his leadership skills and patriotism and that he would not sit silently by if they pushed the Communist message too far.
I thought of Ike today when Obama made a comment about golf during a press encounter. He was commenting on the fact that the putting green on the White House grounds was put there by President Eisenhower, an avid golfer unlike the current President who is said to be pretty pathetic at the game. His sarcastic comment was this: "Can you imagine what they would be saying if I had been the one who did that?"
Hey, Mr. President, Dwight Eisenhower deserved a little respite at the White House. He didn't have to fly about the globe on vacations. Except for his occasional trip to Augusta, or at his family farm in Pennsylvania or at Camp David, he spent most of his time doing something for his country. And what have you accomplished, Mr. Obama, other than the destruction of the country that men like Eisenhower worked so hard to defend.
And to all those media types who thought his remarks were humorous, you are a major part of the problem. For instead of doing your job as America's Fourth Estate, you have allowed yourselves to be turned into an American version of Pravda, the old media mouthpiece which masqueraded as a newspaper in the Communist days. You have disgraced the field of journalism just as this President has disgraced the nation that he serves.
Let's hope we can survive this current period of a rudderless ship and pray for 2016 to usher in a new era of American leadership. Otherwise, we are truly in for a future that will not be very bright. May God bless America and get us through these trying times.
