From the IRS, Fast and Furious and Benghazi scandals to Obamacare and Ebola, Republicans feel like they have a plethora of issues and actions of Obama's to attack. Hearing people speak out in so many states with a critical Senate race underway, these topics are continually being raised and they have clearly raised Republican hopes of gaining a majority in the Senate to go with the likely retention of House control. But there are two big problems which stand in the way of GOP resurgence which are festering in the wings waiting to take center stage. If not an election spoiler, they will provide much pressure on the party in the months ahead.
What are the two issues? They are the party leadership's unwillingness to take bold actions to counter Obama and the issue of immigration reform, which under its current format as endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce, the money behind the movement, I prefer to call amnesty. The leadership is just one of trying to operate from a defensive position and not make any mistakes but amnesty is one which is highly unpopular among the Republican base and the public at large. Let's look at it first.
Amnesty would allow the legalization of millions of illegal aliens and the National Republican Establishment clearly supports the Chamber of Commerce position which rewards lawbreaking. The cost to the taxpayer will be huge and with so many American having given up hope for work, the problem is likely to get much worse. Finally, with the recent unwillingness of Obama to apply current law to the border and the likelihood of both Islamic and cartel terrorists, as well as diseased aliens walking into the country, the Republicans are playing with fire on this issue. I fear that a much more active form of opposition to the program is likely if they continue to support Obama's approach.
And as far as the lack of speaking out on other issues is concerned, I really think that as a group they are just "gutless." They think that by saying nothing they can just make the election about Obama's policies as Obama himself has opined. But the danger is that while it's easy to point out the problems with the current status quo, voters usually want to know what you plan to do to make things better. Despite some ideas being floated about, they are vague and quite weak and not something that is awe inspiring.
America needs bold and inspiring leadership which Republicans haven't displayed in two decades. After all, offense is the best defense and right now they have painted themselves into a weak corner, making vague suggestions on most subjects while boldly supporting Obama on immigration, an approach which ironically will lead to their own demise. Come on, Republicans, wake up and smell the Spirit of America, not the stench that permeates the Beltway. Support the base and the millions of average Americans who are tired of business as usual. This may be your last chance.
