The book is a story of what having hope, determination and a love for others can do, even for a former Confederate soldier and Union prisoner of war. The young man only wants to get home to Currituck County, North Carolina and start a new life, one without thought of the horrors of war. And it's a natural follow-on from my legacy book, "Summers at Old Nags Head," which is a true story of growing up on those beautiful beaches and water -dominated areas known as the Outer Banks and Inner Banks of North Carolina and a touch of Tidewater Virginia as well. While the legacy book covers the mid-twentieth century, the new one uses historical fiction to show how things were in that same area in the period following the Civil War and in the late nineteenth century.
I must add that the ability to write has been given me by God and the more I practice it, the better it gets. From my first book issued in 2012, it has come a long way and sometimes when I'm thinking about how to approach a story, I fell His presence and at times I know He is guiding my hand. That truly makes sense because everything we accomplish is just God working through us when we turn our heart to Him. So, I am thankful to Him, and my wonderful supportive wife, Charyl and photographer Jim Feaster of Rodanthe, North Carolina who graciously granted me permission to use his beautiful picture on my cover. And I can never forget to all my friends and followers who have encouraged me, read my material and bought my books and, finally, I am thankful for the advancement in print technology which allows me to publish a book from the comfort of my small study at home.
