Sometimes even in times of strife and violence we can find a touch of humor and this morning is one of those days. Mayor Ted Wheeler of Portland continues to run his city without a clue and he clearly shows a lack of concern for business owners and residents impacted by continuing riots. What was once a beautiful and viable city is now rapidly become just another rat hole in disrepair as the turmoil continues. But in a way you can look at it as humor, a sick humor that shows how a man in authority can abuse that authority without even seeing what all others can clearly see. And that sick humor comes with the knowledge of how he plans to "work" with the federal government to end the destruction.
Most of the federal law enforcement officers that were sent to Portland have now departed with only the regularly assigned officers remaining on duty. But have the Portland police stopped the threat to the federal facility? No, they haven't and this situation applies to other federal offices within the city as well. In all fairness to the police, they can only do what the mayor allows and, in this case, he gives them no authority. And now Wheeler is true to his colors and says he is fining the federal government five hundred dollars every fifteen minutes that the fence they installed for protection remains up. His argument is that the fencing blocks a public right-of-way, the sidewalk out front, and that the feds never got a permit to install it. Well, one look at the fence shows why that is the case and that's what makes Wheeler's actions so laughable. The right-of- way comes directly up to the building entrance and the defenders of the building needed a defense perimeter to protect the building. The facility has been the recipient of fire bombs and Molotov cocktails and without a perimeter, the defenders might literally become victims of a firing bomb from which they could not escape. The ideologically-driver mayor could care less what his illogical actions cause. He now has sent a bill to Washington for over one half million dollars for the time since he came up with the policy. At twenty-four thousand dollars per day, that wouldn't take long. Wheeler better develop a sense of humor soon, for that is even worthy of more laughs.
There is no doubt that Washington won't pay the bill and they shouldn't, but here is what I would do. I'd send Mayor Wheeler a bill for the cost of manpower, transportation, supplies and equipment that the operation required and also a separate bill for the cost of repairs to return the facility to the exact condition it was in before the mayhem began. So, perhaps the real joke is on Portland. One thing for sure is that Portland has an obligation to provide external security for the facility, just like he has for all businesses in the community. His malfeasance in office is a disgrace and should never be condoned by anyone. As I mentioned in the heading, you really can't make this up and it tells me that liberalism is, indeed, a sickness. It's a sickness of the mind and of the soul. Today's liberalism is not classical liberalism, a philosophy which truly promoted freedom of speech and discourse from all points of view. Today, that has been co-opted by tyranny and that is not something that Americans should tolerate. Never surrender your God-given freedoms or they'll be gone forever as you find yourself living in another Portland or worse. Something to think about, my friends, something to think about.
