Everyone wants to blame the President for all of these happenings, and its true that the corruption of the Administration has been severe, but much is also the fault of a lack of spine by the other equal partners in governing, the Courts and the Congress, which have stood by largely silent while tyranny has been allowed to fester and grow and our Constitution has been unwittingly watered down. Just a generation ago we would have never conceived of forced health care or the unwillingness of our government to go into harm's way to protect American citizens or the confiscation of land by power hungry bureaucrats. But the courts have allowed it to happen with rulings designed to open the door for evil and a cowardly Congress has been afraid to speak up and act on behalf of her people.
Today, however, there are signs that maybe an awakening is about to take place. Benghazi, the IRS scandal, even the outlandish treatment of our injured troops are finally receiving attention with subpoenas being issued, investigations being initiated and indications that some in high places may be called upon to account for their sins against their country and her people. I hope and pray that this is the case.
Politics is indeed a strange business and just when it looks like an outcome is determined, something unexpected happens and the tide turns. In the case of Benghazi and the needless death of four citizens, a single email showing the direct connection of a cover-up to the White House has opened the barn door.
Sadly, it wasn't the work of the Congress that brought this email to light; it took a courageous Conservative legal watchdog group, Judicial Watch, to finally get it released by court action. Tom Fitton and his group should be proud of their work and we Americans should be grateful, for with all of the other ripe fruit of corruption hanging on the government tree of scandals there is certainly more to follow. After all, nothing has been done about Fast and Furious, the forced buyout of GM which now is producing so much of its product in China and, of course, the ever present scourge of Obamacare.
But the Benghazi email did produce one important thing. It put the focus on the issue clearly, and Speaker Boehner, despite his reluctance to do anything on so many issues, has been pressured into creating a Select Committee with subpoena power and he saw the wisdom to appoint a seasoned prosecutor, Congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, to lead the charge. Gowdy will follow legal procedures vigorously in his attempt to root out the who and where of this effort. Hopefully, this will lead to action to preclude this from ever happening again and punishment for those who were responsible.
And it seems that the Benghazi effort has brought forth a new sense in Congress of what is important today. For this week has seen a Contempt of Congress criminal finding being issued to Lois Lerner, former IRS operative, and the forwarding of same for legal action. You will remember that Lerner is the one who made life miserable for Conservative groups and individuals through IRS harassment and pressure, all done to try and eliminate their rights in the political process. The House also voted to refer the matter of the IRS to the Justice Department requesting appointment of a Special Prosecutor to further investigate the IRS malfeasance.
While we know that Eric Holder will scoff at this latter request, we also know that since Barack Obama said he wanted to get to the bottom of the matter, and then obfuscated it, and that Holder himself has already been held in Contempt of Congress on another matter by the House, pressure for something to be done is growing. Evidence of this is the fact that some House Democrats are starting to get shaky feet. In the case of Lerner, six Democrats from Red States voted with the majority. In the Special Prosecutor request vote, twenty-six voted with the majority. Yes, indeed, some Democratic politicians up for reelection this year are indded standing on shaky ground.
Finally, retired General Eric Shinseki, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, has also been subpoenaed by Congressman Jeff Miller, Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, to testify before Congress about the growing scandal in the VA regarding treatment of seriously ill patients. Answers will be demanded about why so many patient appointments were delayed for extended periods of time yet active records indicated there were no backlogs. Apparently a secret record ledger was being kept to make things look better. We know this was going on in Phoenix and at a Colorado clinic, so where else might it have been taking place? This is no way to treat Patriots who put themselves in harm's way for their country.
All of the actions taking place this week in light of the apparent government stench bring hope, for as one scandal opens up and another is found, the light of transparency, ironically something which Obama falsely proclaimed would be a hallmark of his Administration, will bring fresh air and public knowledge of the events and actions that have taken place. And this great Sleeping Giant will finally face the reality of what has been going on in Washington. The truth is the first step to cleansing America's rotting corpse of government addiction and misbehavior.
Scandals over here, scandals over there, wherever Obama leaves his mark, scandals follow everywhere.
Pray for those tasked with rooting out the scandals, pray for repentance by and forgiveness for those who perpetrate the scandals, and pray for a return of God to the hearts of America. With Him we can do anything, without Him we are truly nothing.
