While you have many employees who love you, there are a few miscreants who are jealous of your success and disagree with a number of your decisions. They know there are several powerful people with no conscience in town who would like to steal your business and they meet with them. The miscreants carry out a plan for the powerful to falsify stories about issues within the company that violate law. You have no awareness thereof until you receive notice that you have been indicted on charges blindly. The court took the input received and their evidence and, with a judge beholden to one of the powerful who also has strong political connections, it was ruled that it was unnecessary for you to provide evidence and they could proceed without it.
Once again, the powerful have the connections which influence the judges in the town and the media and as you go into court with the best lawyer you can find who is not indebted to the opposition, you find your motions are being denied while the state's case just sails along. But you have one final ace up your sleeve, one independent city councilman who you know well and a person unafraid to speak up publicly in such a situation. You call on him, go over the sham procedures that have been ongoing, and he calls a press conference, making sure that the one radio station in town that wants real news is notified. He knows the local television will send someone but will give only minimal coverage. In the press conference, the councilman merely tells the truth about what is ongoing and when it is over, the station news director spends twenty minutes getting details and then, only an hour later, the story shows up on their hourly local news as the headline story, garnering public attention and outrage immediately.
You are awakened the next morning by your attorney, saying, "Turn on the TV you've got to see this. We're back in the ball game big time. I'll wait on the line to get your reaction."
You quickly turn on the TV and there is the anchor for the local station standing in front of the court house talking about you and your case. He mentions the radio station which started it all and is talking about how the judge has temporarily cancelled today's court session pending developments. When you go back to the phone, your attorney says he wants to meet and go over strategy and when he arrives, he goes over your testimony and lists a number of witnesses who have already testified for the prosecution that he will now be able to cross examine. The truth will finally come out. He also schedules a press conference for you since the judge previously had you under a gag order and you couldn't even defend yourself. He tell you to sit tight until tomorrow and then he would take you to the press conference. You are somewhat overcome with a mix of emotions and you sit down with a cup of coffee while you ponder just what happened. Then you ask yourself a simple question that is not easy to answer. How in the world did this come to be in this great town in the most wonderful nation on earth?
To get the answer to the question, maybe we should ask the President of the United States who, on a scale of probably a thousand times or more greater than this situation, is facing a similar such travesty, only one of not local but national importance. Ponder that for a moment.
