A walk along the beach reveals an unusual quiet in fog. The sound of the surf is muffled, the calls of seagulls, while faintly heard, sound as if they are coming from anywhere and everywhere at the same time and you can feel the stillness and the peace that surrounds us. The same applies to other locales such as on the farm. All the noises are muffled and until you see whatever is making, them they sound as if they are anywhere and everywhere, just like on the beach. Only the cry of an animal in distress, perhaps a young turkey or a squirrel being snatched by an eagle stands out while all else is serene.
When we finally see other living things, as they become visible it's as if they are gradually walking out of a cloud which, of course, is exactly what they are doing. Walking in a pasture, one has to be very careful around livestock for that reason because they might easily be spooked and, of course, care must be taken not to become a prey ourselves since, on occasion, a black bear or even a Florida panther could cross the property. They usually avoid us unless they are with their own helpless young, in which case they will attack if threatened, but their presence is rare. The sheer degree of being in such a surreal environment, though, that it is so different from daily life that the dimension of the unknown comes to mind, but finally, back in the barn, the horses, barn cats and dogs bring reality back to the picture.
Then, after pondering the beauty, yet different quality of a foggy morning, God finally decides the mystical existence has drawn on long enough and the warming sun melts the cloud cover on the ground. As the rays show themselves, the cloud begins to dissipate and on a special occasion, it might even produce a rainbow which provides remembrance of a promise God gave to Noah thousands of years ago. That rainbow, God's sign to man that He will never completely destroy life on the earth again, excepting Noah's ark party, gives comfort as we soon revert back to the normalcy of life as it normally exists. But the experience is a wondrous one, so I would recommend that the next time you find yourself enveloped in fog, take a walk and experience a unique feeling for yourself. After all, our life is short and experiencing all of the little things and differences in life make us stronger and wiser.
