God created us; He is the foundation of the natural order of things and when we follow His path and live by the rules He made, things work better. The family unit and what it traditionally stood for is a key to that very success since each generation learns from those who came before. When the family dies off, so does the learning and the knowing which came from that unit. It is not a village which raises a family, it's a devoted mother and father who, working together, accomplishes that and we need to return to that long held truth. That doesn't mean that all families worked well as there have always been families which were dysfunctional. But for the large majority, when love was involved and caring and sharing were taught in a godly fashion, coupled with the nurturing of the individual spirit, we advanced and developed the wherewithal to weather successfully the challenges of life and could do so using our own initiative.
So what am I recommending that we do about this situation in the Spirit of Christmas. For parents, play an active role in the training and development of children, don't leave it up to others for the values they may push may not be those that support the traditional concept of family. Teach them about the laws of nature established by God, the Constitution under which our government was organized and has of late strayed significantly and live the example that is representative of what America was created for. This isn't a political party thing, it's a societal survival factor. Encourage individuality, respect for hard work and orderly behavior and show by what you do how it improves life and keeps it orderly.
If as adults, we ourselves don't understand these concepts, do a little soul searching and self-study. Read the Bible, read the Constitution and its Bill of Rights. Think about what those words say and what they mean, not what you want them to mean. And then do some digging and learn about our individual heritage for it was the basis for developing our thoughts and values and it needs to be honored. Yes, our forebears made mistakes but never try to judge those from the past by current standards. We can't criticize that which we really never experienced and, in the end, it's clear that there's no place that can match America for freedom, dignity and individuality. Don't kill it, build on it.
Look around at what has happened to the good old family unit and it becomes clear why it was created so many years ago. It works and it is or was the foundation of development of each of us. Honor it, cherish it and live it with God at the centerpiece of it all. And incorporate it into the celebration of the Christ Child as the reason for the season. The rest will come with practice and we will know exactly who we are.
Have a Merry Christmas and keep the Spirit of Christmas alive every day. It can change your life and the life of others around you.
