A Profile of Christian Courage: Adoniram Judson (1788-1850)

PictureAdoniram Judson, Baptist Missionary
While we American Christians are often troubled these days with some of the changes we see in our great land, we have very little experience with what courage could be required of us in maintaining and proclaiming our faith in Jesus Christ.  Adoniram Judson, the first missionary sponsored by the Baptist Church, and the man who convinced the church to start its World Missions organization, is a good example of some of the extremes of sacrifice and courage that Christians are called to live.  I think he offers us a picture of what sacrifice and devotion really entails.

Judson was born in coastal Massachusetts, the son of a Congregational minister.  His promise was discovered early when he was able to read a passage from the Bible to his parents at the tender age of three and as a student he excelled, graduating from the College of Rhode Island (now Brown University) as the Valedictorian of his class at the age of 19.  To the regret of his parents, however, he fell under the influence of his best friend at college, Jacob Eames, a Deist.  While acknowledging the existence of God, he nonetheless began to doubt the active involvement of God in the life of man.

Starting work as a teacher, he lost touch with Eames but decided a year or so later that he wanted to find out where he was.  On horseback, he traveled around the New York City area looking for him.  Alas, after a futile search, one night he stopped at a roadside inn for lodging and, while having difficulty sleeping, listened to the man in the next room who sounded to be in agony.  The innkeeper told him he was caring for the man who was very ill.

Early the next morning, Judson inquired of his host as to the condition of the man and was told that he had passed during the night.  When he asked who the man was, he was told it was Jacob Eames.  He had looked diligently for his friend only to find himself lodging in the room next door at the time of his death.

Judson took this as a sign that he had better straighten up his life and get back to a godly life and he took heed.  He embarked on the road to the ministry and, while preparing himself, he saw an English sailor's
pamphlet about Burma and its lack of Christianity and saw this as a golden opportunity to serve his God in a special way.

Completing his studies, he requested and received assignment as a missionary and, with his new bride Anne, sailed for Burma.  Somewhere along the way he became convinced that immersion was the only way to be baptized and, as a result, became a Baptist.  Because of this belief and the resultant need for a new sponsorship, he was able to convince the Baptist Church through his initiative, good manners and conviction to sponsor him and several others as the first Baptist missionary to Burma.

Life and work were not easy for the young man in Burma.  He was harassed, even spent some time in prison, and it took him seven years to gain his first convert.  This task was made almost impossible by the Burmese Buddhist government which would issue a death warrant to any Buddhist disavowing his faith for Christianity.

Other problems came along because of the assignment and the circumstances.  His son died at eight months, his first wife and a later wife died due to health conditions caused by the climate and diseases of the time, yet Judson labored on.  His spirit and hope was reinforced at a time when he was doubting himself when he learned of his thirty-five year old brother's death, a man who had not been a  believer, who saw the error of his ways and accepted Jesus before his death.

In the end, following a forty year commitment to his mission in Burma, Judson left behind a legacy of seven thousand baptized converts, sixty-three Baptist congregations, and assignment of one hundred sixty three missionaries to the country.  He also translated the Bible into Burmese and his work is still followed by the large number of Christians in the country today.

Despite personal hardship and heartache, Judson never forgot what his mission was and what he felt was his duty to his Lord.  Today he is remembered with a college bearing his name, many Baptist churches throughout America doing the same and a following in Burma that would have never been possible without his hard work and sacrifice.

He died at the age of sixty two in 1850 but he is well remembered and he offers to each of us Christians, regardless of our denomination or church, a stellar example of what service to Christ really means.  May God bless his soul.

Let's use the example of Adoniram Judson, missionary extraordinaire, as a wonderful example of putting Christ first.  Are we Christians today willing to do the same?

But They Just Didn't Believe

Later, He appeared to the eleven and they sat at the table; and He rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.  Mark 18:14 (ESV)

After Jesus died that horrible death following more than nine hours of agony on the Cross, His disciples were discouraged and lacking in Spirit.  They didn't know what to do even though He had made special efforts to tell them what was expected of them.  And shortly after His resurrection was accomplished and Mary and the others found the empty tomb, reports began to come in of sightings but they still didn't have the necessary faith to believe.  Only when He joined them in the room, showed his hands and let them touch his side that had been pierced did they believe.

He told them He was disappointed in their lack of faith, but He also recognized that although they were good people and loved Him, they were, after all, mere mortals.  And he proceeded to spend a few last days with them to continue guidance and instruction for He knew the undertaking that they were about to begin and how difficult and painful it would be.  After all, all but one of them would be killed because of their belief in Him and all would suffer.

Looking at ourselves today, do we have the strength and courage to be modern Apostles for Christ in a world that has become so corrupt and selfish?  Are we willing to put our selves in second place and make Christ first in all that we say and do?  That is the challenge that we face and it is what He expects of us.  It's why He gave His all so that we would have the opportunity to live forever with Him.

Dear Lord,  Give us the strength and courage to live our lives as modern day Apostles for Christ.  Show us the way, the truth and the life always and keep us ever mindful that if we are up to the task, if we do what is asked of us by our Savior, we will live forever in Glory with Him and with You.  We ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

God bless you all and have a most blessed Lord's Day with Jesus always in your heart.  And now, Onward, Christian soldiers.

The Day Before the Day of Horrors

On the evening of this day so many years ago, Jesus gathered together His disciples for His last supper with them.  Here is where He taught them about communion, a way in which the Church which would follow could remember Him in a solemn ceremony in respect for the blood He shed and His body which was so brutally battered until He breathed His last breath as a human mortal on this earth.

Why do I call this day the "Day of Horrors"?  It is hard to imagine anything that could be worse than to be a man knowing that shortly he would be arrested and tried for a non-crime and then to be convicted and given a capital punishment sentence.  But what truly makes it the most horrific punishment of all is the way in which his sentence was carried out.  Flogged mercilessly first, he was then tasked with carrying his own Cross, two heavy wooden beams, on his own shoulders through the streets while the crowd hurled insults and mocked him and he was being prodded by the soldiers escorting him.

Finally, he climbs the hill to Golgotha, is staked by his hands and feet to the Cross which is planted firmly in the ground while the life slowly creeps out of him.  For approximately nine hours he slowly and agonizingly died while he had all the fears, pains and doubts of any mortal man.  He even questioned his Father as to why he was being forsaken, but he labored on until finally dying.

This night we celebrate the birth of the Last Supper, our Holy Communion sacrament, as our living tribute to the Christ who died for us.  We don't understand all of what he was going through, but we do know that it was all for us.  And we even get a picture of just how corrupting Satan can be under any circumstances as we watch one of his principal followers, Judas, betray him while Jesus knows it will happen. Because of all of these things culminating in the Cross, we have been given the ultimate gift available possible from a loving God: the gift of everlasting life.

I hope each of you will have the opportunity to take communion this day.  If not, pray and read the story of the Last Supper in your Bible, for no gift could ever match this one and we must always remember it and use it as a way to keep us on the straight and true path to be with our Lord and Savior.

Remember Him, love Him and believe.  That is our charge this day.  That is the meaning of the Cross.

Have a wonderful day with Christ in your heart.

He Arrives On A Little Donkey

PictureJesus enters Jerusalem in triumph
"Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king is coming to you, humbly and mounted on a donkey, and on a  colt, the foal of a beast of burden'".  John 12:13 (ESV)

On that Palm Sunday so many years ago, our Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem to cheers and in triumph as the King of Kings.  But this king was not arrayed in rich garments of splendor or riding in a gleaming chariot or carriage with magnificent horses.  Instead he rode on a young donkey. And instead of entering across a royal carpet, it was one of palm fronds and clothing of average citizens, all eager to hear his message of hope in a life that was, for most, poor and hard.

Little did they know that this Day of Triumph would begin a week that would end in sorrow and tears as this Man-God, this Jesus of Nazareth, would be put to death on the following Friday by leaders of the synagogue who saw Him as a direct threat to their wealth and power.

The reason for His coming to earth in human form would soon play itself out and, in so doing, the entire future of mankind on the earth would change.  His message would be spread to the farthest ends of the earth and despite horrible torture of many of his followers and their death, others would pick up the work and continue onward as it does today.

We modern day Christians owe our lives to Jesus Christ and His Father who love us and want us to spend eternity with them when our days on earth are done.  All we have to do is place our faith in Him and believe in Him.  If we do that, we will live our lives for Him and earn a place at the Table of God the Father and the Son forever with the Holy Spirit within our soul.  That is the real message of this Holy Week which begins today.  Pay attention and accept His message and the gift of eternity is yours forever.

Dear Lord,  Thank you for offering yourself as a human sacrifice so that we might live.  Help us to never forget the importance that you bring to our lives if we truly live them for you.  Be with us in our trials and difficulties and give us the strength to stand beside you and for you always.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Talk with Him, read the scriptures and know that He is always standing by to guide you in all that you do.  And have a wonderful Sunday afternoon basking in the light of his glow.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Have you ever noticed carefully the way life unfolds the morning after a storm?  The air is clear and clean, the sun comes out ever so brightly with a beautiful sky and all living plant life shows its best green color while the flowers open beautifully and display their magic.  The birds sing a little better and even we humans come forward with a much brighter outlook on life with a livelier step and a more positive attitude.

Well, if you took the time to worship the Lord yesterday on the Sabbath life should seem this way to you today as well.  Regular worship, supplemented by reading the Word and praying to him in thanks and praise are simple steps that each of us needs to perform routinely.  Our belief in our Lord and Savior requires constant practice and repetition.  The more we do it, the better we perform and the more it means to us.

But there is much more to it than just that.  If we fully accept our Savior as Lord, we become like the morning after the storm.  We throw off the muck and mire of life and become clean and fresh again,  bathed in His shower of blessings and the warmth of His love.  And by living by His Commandments and His Word we discipline ourselves to live the Christian life of love and hope, a life that will lead us at the end of our limited time on earth to our eternal salvation through Him.

There can be no greater grace or love than this and we are so blessed that He has given us this opportunity.  Will you accept it?

Dear Lord:  Thank you for the grace and love that you have given to us for we are mere sinners who are undeserving of your mercy.  Help us to open our hearts and minds to you and allow the Holy Spirit into our bodies so that we might live for you both now and forevermore.  We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Our Savior, who died that we might live.  Amen.

Have a wonderful day and remember always to keep it with God.

Are Democrats at War With God?  PART ONE

I realize that the question cited is one that can be quite controversial and many people will see it differently from me.  Having said that, however, I think it is important to put on the table what I think the evidence shows is clear and, in doing so, I must start by defining who God is from my perspective.  This will constitute Part 1, today's blog entry.  Tomorrow I will address the actual question based upon my concept of God. So here goes.

God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  He created the earth, man in His image and gave humans the dominion over all other living things on this earth. He knows everything and everyone and He knows what they are doing and thinking at all times.  In attempting to get man to live life the way He desires, He commissioned many individuals to help Him get His message out.  In the Old Testament they include brave me like the aforementioned Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Also included are others like Job, Noah, Moses, Joshua, King David and many more.

Man has been a sinner since the very beginning with Adam and Eve and God gives each of us great latitude in making our own decisions. He gave Moses the Ten Commandments as rules for a godly man to live but he has left us with the decision and temptation to test us. That's what free will is all about. We get to choose the good or bad, but we also must suffer the consequences of the same, consequences which are harsh and severe.

With the birth of His only Son Jesus Christ, the immaculate birth, His love unfolded in a more readily seen and understood form.  While Jesus is of the Father, He also walked the earth as a mortal but with one major difference.  He was perfect, He never sinned and He was full of love, for love is what He seeks from all of us.  If we love Him openly and totally, we will follow Him and God's edicts and live the Christian life that He seeks for us.  And by His death by the horrific way of Crucifixion, He gave the ultimate gift that He was sent to deliver: the gift of Eternal Life after we die.  And He also directed that those who were left to spread the Word would do so to all corners of the earth and to all people. We can accept it, or reject it, but He wants us to be with Him forever and His arms are open to give us the opportunity.

After His death, Jesus wanted to leave us with something that would guide us and help us always make the right and godly decisions in things that we do.  This was accomplished by His sending to us the Holy Spirit, that unseen part of God that enters our heart and serves as our constant counselor if only we open the door to our heart to let it in.  The Spirit infected the early Christian teacher like Paul, Barnabas, Aquila and Priscilla and others found in the Book of Acts and the torch has been passed to men and women of faith throughout the world ever since.

So in a nutshell, I believe that God is of the Old Testament, but He is also God in the form of Jesus as taught in the New Testament and finally, He is the Holy Spirit sent to us by Jesus after His ascension into to Heaven to keep us on the straight and righteous path, following the grace of Jesus to Glory. These three components, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the Holy Trinity, the totality of a loving and caring God.

Now having defined my concept of God, we will turn tomorrow to directly answering the question: Are Democrats at war with God?  But before leaving you with an opening but no answer I will add one qualifying point.  When I refer to the term Democrats, I am not talking about all individuals who call themselves Democrat by way of political affiliation.  What I am referring to is the organization, the party, which sets policy and operates political action groups on behalf of the organization's candidates who support these policies as well as those who support each of those policy points. And that's what we will discuss tomorrow.

In the meantime, have a great day and treat it as if it is the last day of your life.  Since we never know when our earthly life will end, be prepared.  God bless you all.

Writing: A Wonderful Means of Expression

11/19/2013

Picture
I have always enjoyed writing.  It goes back to when I was a young boy and asked for a typewriter for Christmas. I dreamed of being a reporter covering a hot scoop like in the movies. I didn't expect to get one but I was certainly surprised and happy when I found a classic Royal with a big red bow above the keyboard right behind a wing chair next to the Christmas tree.  I thought it was the greatest piece of machinery there was and now I look back at it and wonder how I ever accomplished anything with it.  I found out later that my folks were more than pleased that I wanted one.  As I grew older I learned why.

Writing affords a means of recording our thoughts, putting them on paper where we can modify and change them before finalizing them.  It requires our minds mind to be active and involved and exposes us to vocabulary and grammar in the best way: practical application.  We get to see for ourselves why we were taught the use of the English language the way we were.  For those younger who no longer get the strong grounding in English grammar in modern America, my sympathies.

I am by no
means the perfect writer, and I don't that anyone ever reaches perfection, but the more we write,  the better our work becomes.  And if we practice, practice and practice some more, the improvement of quality over time is amazing.  It's like anything else, it requires work.

I always wrote letters and some short stories as a younger man, but I could always justify why I didn't have the time to do it as much as I wanted.  I dreamed for many years about writing a book but never did so.  Finally, as I neared retirement I realized that it was now or never.  I had the time, I had a perfectly functional computer for word processing, a quiet and serene rural setting from which to become creative and I had plenty of subjects to write about: animals, lots and lots of animals.

I took a year long intensive writing course in the year prior to retiring and, upon completion, began submitting some short pieces.  These included short stories and devotionals which, surprisingly, frequently found their mark and an audience.  Next I started this daily blog, writing about politics, animals, other aspects of nature and my God.  I found that it was a perfect way to practice daily, even when I wasn't working on a particular project and over time I have found a small but active audience.

Finally I took the jump and wrote my first book, Honey, We Shoulda' Bought the Ark, which is now in it's second month of availability.  It is having some early success online and readers may have noticed my plugs sometimes on twitter or Facebook.  And the best part, I am enjoying myself immensely and feel like I have finally completed something that I have always wanted to do.  In fact, I am now beginning the early stages of my next book which will be fictional, but with a lot of real life situations included, and also involving much about nature, animals and the importance of God.

Today I have been invited to present my book at a large Christian school in Jacksonville with an audience of both students and parents.  I look forward to this greatly and feel that I have been called to speak openly and in writing about God's wonders and glories.

Each of us has a built in talent that we need to cultivate.  Some of us have never taken the time to really assess one's self to find that talent.  Ask for God's help and look within yourself, find out what really excites you and motivates you, and your special gift will emerge.  Cultivate it and use it for the glory of God. It will be of benefit to many in addition to yourself and it will give a feeling of satisfaction and joy that might have been missing in life.

Dear Lord, Thank You for making each of us different and special in our own way.  Open our hearts to You so that it might help us find our special gift and use it for Your Glory.  Maybe we are meant to be a writer, maybe we have a gift for speaking, maybe we just have a way with young people that helps them to grow and develop with moral strength and courage.  Whatever it might be, infect each of us with Your Spirit that we might unlock our talents and gifts and use them to further Your ongoing work of of love and redemption. We ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

It's Sunday: Time to Reconnect with God

11/17/2013

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.  ROMANS 16:17.

I'll bet that the first thing that many of you wanted to do, my Christian brothers and sisters, when you saw the title was to ask:  What do you mean, time to reconnect with God?  I stay connected with God.

But bear with me, I am not talking about each individual.  I know that many of us are filled with the Spirit and try with all our heart to do what is right.  Despite this individual effort, however, our general American society, created under a compact with God is today rapidly losing His influence.  And this change has many of us troubled, even downhearted and in danger of falling into despair.  Our charge, Christians, is for us to never falter but instead to maintain our steadfast love of Him and tell the story of Jesus to those who don't know Him.  We must be modern day Disciples of our Lord and the best way to do this is through our example.

How many of you know someone who never enters the door of a church?  How many times do you see things happening that you know are wrong but yet you watch silently and say nothing?  What about when your children bring home something from school that you think is objectionable in its teachings but you don't follow up?  Or even, most common of all, see something objectionable on TV and let it pass?

Each of these things, commonplace today, offer teaching moments.  They offer an opportunity for us to get involved in our own little way to change things.  Ask that friend if he or she would like to go to church.  Take the objectionable material and schedule an appointment with the teacher to ask about it and challenge it.  Turn off the TV and demand changes to programming. Get involved, speak up, politely with a smile on your face, yet firmly.

Don't let the little things that have negative impacts on our belief system and the development of our families and our communities go unchallenged.  If we do these things with a loving countenance, yet strong in our beliefs, we might be surprised at how much good we can accomplish.  If it does nothing else, it will require others to face it and think about it.  Thinking about it is the first step to facing the truth in both ourselves and in others.

What got me thinking about this was the ad I saw on the internet, a government sponsored ad, urging young people to sign up for the Obamacare coverage.  It depicted an attractive young lady advocating enrollment so that she would have free birth control pills, thereby affording her the "freedom" to coax a young man she desired into her bed.  This ad is being perpetrated by the very same government that wants to tell us what to eat and how to live for good health.  It is bad health policy, it has serious negative health potential  and it is totally immoral.  It  just shows the general depravity that so many have learned to accept as normal with the assistance of a government trying to create a new normal, a normal where there are no absolutes in life.

Having said that, I think it becomes abundantly clear what we need to do going forward here in America.  We Christians must lead the reconnection of our society with God.  We must follow the verse of Romans cited at the beginning of this commentary.  We must refuse to support doctrine being pushed which violates our sense of how God wants us to live.  We must not bend on this, for the consequences of going down the wrong path lead to disaster for all of us.  But turning to God and making our actions in accord with his Law and teaching and helping others to do the same is the only way for America to reconnect with He who made her great.  It is the only way to return America to her former self.

God bless you all and have a wonderful Sabbath Day.

Our Christian Military Chaplains Are Under Assault

8/7/2013

Over the last few months I have written a lot of blog entries about the degradation of personal freedoms that Americans are facing today.  It is a sad fact that the Obama administration has taken upon itself a policy of deciding what "IT" thinks is appropriate or not in the Constitution and, in the case of those things it finds inappropriate, to do everything in its power to negate them.  The rule of law has definitely been thrown out the window.

Nowhere is the problem more noticeable than in the constitutionally-protected right to freedom of religion.  Our heroic military personnel are perhaps the most damaged in this area for the administration is taking an extremely hostile stand against Christianity and the expression of faith by military personnel.

Are you aware that Christian military chaplains have been told not to invoke the name of Jesus Christ in their prayers?  Did you also know that the administration also wants to designate chaplains for atheism?  I find both of these things detestable, but what should we expect from a political group that seems to have no place for God.  The President of the United States, a man who claims to be a Christian, does everything to treat Christianity harshly while cointinually approving of groups that don't represent love in their heart.  Remember, friends, Christianity is the one true religion based upon love.  That's the reason Jesus died for us.  He loved us and wanted to give us eternal life.

Some in Congress have spoken up, but not nearly enough and I think it is now the responsibility of American Christians everywhere to put their two cents forward.  How about writing or calling every Congressman in the United States and voicing your outrage?  Tell them to take this fight, along with so many others, directly to the President.  Speak up, speak out and let everyone you know what you think of this transgression, for now is the time to stand firm and not go weak.

Jesus wants us to be His modern day Apostles.  Nothing we could do could offer a better example of doing this.  Our young Christian men and women in uniform deserve the opportunity to express their religion, practice their religion and love their God.  Believe me, there is no atheist in a foxhole.

In closing let me cite a short personal story about this subject which I think makes it very clear.  Years ago when I was a member of the Session of a Presbyterian Church in Maryland, our Presbytery was considering elimination of support for ROTC, the major training arm in colleges for development of military officers.  Many in the Presbytery wanted to eliminate the program, saying that it wasn't appropriate for "peaceful" Christians to support the art of war.

During the discussion, I was asked, as a former military officer, what I thought of the proposal.  I looked at my colleagues and just asked them one question.  Who would you prefer to be a commissioned officer leading troops into battle, a God-fearing Christian or a person without strong principles and convictions?  The motion was quickly tabled.

Christian friends, this is an important fight.  I think in many ways it is a test by the Left to see what they can "get away with".  I think it is also a test of us by God to see if we will truly support Him when the heat is on.   Let's not let them "get away with" eliminating religious freedom for our military personnel.

God bless you, God bless all of our men and women in uniform, and God bless America.

George Zimmerman Stays in the News

A small story broke in the last day or two about George Zimmerman.  The man who was acquitted of any criminal charges in the death of Trayvon Martin apparently played the role of Good Samaritan last Thursday in his hometown of Sanford, Florida.  It seems that he came upon an overturned car and assisted the removal of the driver and four passengers along with the help of one other passerby.

So George Zimmerman, the man being maligned by many around the country without even understanding the basis for the verdict did a good deed for someone he never met.  Sure sounds like he must really be an evil guy, right?

I think this case is instructive of a general trend in America that is not very good.  It shows a lack of knowledge, a lack of understanding, and a lack of common sense and morality.  We who live in a land where a defendant is supposed to be "innocent until proven guilty"  find ourselves instead with an opposite result.  Apparently since Zimmerman was found not guilty, he and his parents have had to go into hiding because of all of the death threats.  Even a lady in the area who has a phone number only one digit off from Zimmerman's is getting dozens and dozens of death threats.  And the President of the United States, a man wo is supposed to represent all of the people and be dispassionate in all of his public utterings has clearly chosen sides with Sharpton and the likes.  Meanwhile his hometown of Chicago is a war zone with children being murdered daily and it completely escapes his attention. This is outrageous behavior and instead of being criticized for it we find the lamestream media enthusiastically endorsing it.

America, it's time to move on.  There is no story here except for a tragedy that was unfortunate and did not violate the law.  And Florida, despite the words of McCain and others who are always looking for a crisis, stand your ground on the "Stand Your Ground" law.  It works, it reduces crime, and it has been proven to be very effective for minorities protecting themselves.  Bet you won't find that statement in the news anywhere?

I pray that Trayvon Martin's family and George Zimmerman's family are both healed over time.  It is time for cooler heads to prevail and stop this madness.  And it's also time for us to focus on the big picture: the travesties being perpetuated on us by a government that is truly out of control and knows no boundaries.  It's time, America, for us to rein her in and make sure that freedom and God lead our thoughts, words and actions.

God bless America and may she return to her roots.
