This situation is found deeply embedded in both parties of our two party system and core values, substance and good decision-making is replaced by buzz words, sound bytes and doctored reports and utterances. Quite frankly, more often than not these pundits take on a campaign of their own often unbeknownst to the candidate and what he or she seeks for America. It's been going on for generations and it has led us into the mess we find ourselves in today.
So what is the cause? Well, it's several things. Lack of term limits which allows the original citizen-legislator concept championed by the Founders to be turned into careerism. The longer someone is on office, the more they become enthralled with the perks and privileges and power. And then there are the career staff members, most of whom originate in Washington (or many state capitals as well) and make a career of working for politicians, most of whom being naive when they first came to office and the careerists often mold them where they want them. And it's natural that this rolls over into the election campaign apparatus which really has a life of its own. Most campaign operatives aren't nearly as committed to the views of the candidates but the win itself, and that waters down the message.
The system today is so established that to make change is nearly impossible, yet an infusion of outside talent is what is needed, bringing a fresh perspective from the heartland as opposed to the inside the beltway crowd. So think about this the next time you hear of an elected official voting yes on legislation without reading it, because the lobbyists and the political staff generally wrote and negotiated it. And while they may have good intentions, never doubt that all kinds of "stuff" has worked its way into the documents which sometimes carry more clout than the original intent itself. And demand that elected officials truly require a significant period of public review on all bills before they are finalized by voting into law. That is probably the only way that we, the people can ever get a grip on the gravity of what they are doing to us.
God bless America, and may she awake to a better day with God at center stage in all of our lives. After all, only a magnanimous Creator really has the answer and we need his guidance in all things that we do. And this, of course, applies to all politicians and their "handlers" as well.
