For those of us who have an upbringing in the Christian faith, the above passage is one of the best known and beloved in our belief structure. But even if we believe that Jesus was God in human form on earth, we often find our way doubting His love and devotion to us and falter in living as we should.
For others who have never experienced the Christian faith in any significant way, we might find it seemingly non-sensible, after all how can a God-Man live life on earth as a mere human and allow himself to be a living sacrifice for others? Wouldn't he opt to stop the play in mid-stream and change the course of history just for his own benefit? Why would be be willing to die so horrifically that others might be afforded the chance for Eternal Life?
Friends, if we don't know or have doubts, we will ultimately find ourselves on the road to nowhere in our lives, a nowhere life that when it ends on this earth lands us in darkness and death. All of the things that we do on this earth that are solely done for our own accumulation of wealth and luxury result in nothingness when life as we know it is done; we all will find out that we truly can't take it with us. And that means that we have spent our entire life on a road to nowhere.
Contrast that with a life for Jesus, putting Him first in all that we do and living for Him. If we do that, we will find a new kind of richness and accomplishment, one that helps to fulfill His goal for all of His human flock and results in a meaningful and glorious life both here and when we leave this world. Think about it, open your heart and let the Spirit flow in, for in so doing you will find a purpose and a meaning to your life grander than anything you can imagine and, by staying true to His wishes, you CAN take it with you. The Spirit that fills your heart and soul will be with you forever.
If you doubt that, just give it a try. Open a Bible and start reading it, but give it time to sink in. Close your eyes and "talk" to your Maker one on one. Prayer has no set format; just be honest and ask for His guidance. Ask Him to enter your life by opening your heart to His message. And also try going to a church service in the company of others who are mortals just like you, but who want to change their lives forever.
None of us are perfect, but all He wants is for us to open ourselves and give Him the chance to enter our lives. By doing so, he will put you on the Road to Eternity, a sharp turn from the Road to Nowhere. Try it, you will find it fills that void in your life; that's what it is designed for.
Dear Lord: Thank you for being here for us and for loving us even though we clearly don't deserve your love. Help us to keep our hearts open for you always and to commune with you daily as we seek a better life with a divine ending. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
