The Greatest Memories a Boy Could Have: "SUMMERS AT OLD NAGS HEAD"

Bodie Island Light: Great-granddaddy Gallop was the Keeper for 26 years.
As I boy I was one of the luckiest kids ever.  I had the good fortune of having a mother who was a North Carolina Outer Banker and a father who loved those Outer Banks where she was born. They met while he was interning and she was studying nursing at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in the Depression and fell in love. The result was their marriage, the birth of three children and their planning and building a wonderful summer home in Old Nags Head in the late 1940s.  It was a place where I spent my summers annually, basking in the beauty, the fun and sometimes the hard work that came with beach life in that beautiful spot on the Atlantic shore.  Now finally, I have put my thoughts and memories of those "Glory Days" on paper and I am in the final stages of finalizing this book of my experiences.

"Summers at Old Nags Head: Boyhood Glory Days of the 1950s and '60s"  tells my story of those wonderful years.  It was a simpler time, a less crowded time and a time when dogs could roam free and Willys jeeps had limitless access to the sandy beaches.  Cottage owners and those who came to rent cottages nearby each summer became friends, looking forward to seeing each other every summer and creating close bonds.  Little boys could imagine what it was like to be Blackbeard the Pirate or even leading an Army coming ashore in combat. A run down the big dunes of Jockey's Ridge always meant a fall when little legs couldn't keep  up with speed and gravity and those green tree frogs would always tickle when washing off the sand and salt in the outdoor shower.

Nobody locked doors, everyone kept eyes on all of the children and it was a time of joy, relaxation and plain and simple fun. We didn't need fancy gadgets like I-phones and four-wheelers for kids, just a sand shovel and maybe one of those old metal trucks could keep us occupied for hours. If we had neither, a piece of shingle would do and we could design highway masterpieces in the sand, Army troop emplacements for toy soldiers or beach houses using sea oat stalks for stilts. We were only limited by our imagination which was endless.  And all the seafood you could handle was available by helping the local commercial fishermen and crabbers bring in their catch right on the beach or in the sound.  That was always pleasing to Mom. And there is oh, so much more in the coming book.

Writing this book has been a true labor of love, with stories about heroic Outer Bankers as well as family stories, the history of the area and a look at the way things used to be.  It's still beautiful but, compared to those glory days, it can never match those less stressful, more relaxing times.  It was  truly "Happy Days" at the beach.  So. if you love the more remote and rustic beaches like the Outer Banks used to be in those good old days, then pull up a chair and get yourself a copy when it comes out real soon.  It will be a great summer read while enjoying a beautiful day at the beach, a perfect combination.

COMING SOON ON AMAZON KINDLE AND PRIME: "Summers at Old Nags Head: Boyhood Glory Days of the 1950s and '60s.  These are memories that deserve to be shared. I'll keep you posted at Facebook.com/northflorida writer and on this website and blog.

A Final Thought About Memorial Day

Generals Grant and Lee at Appomattox
Many Americans may not be aware of the origins of Memorial Day and I thought, for the sake of real history, that a short commentary on this subject would be appropriate.  It's a subject that was recently addressed eloquently by Wesley Pruden, Editor Emeritus of the Washington Times, in that publication and is good history.  The supporting photo of Generals Grant and Lee, meeting in Appomattox in April 1865 to finalize surrender is a most appropriate photo to accompany the story.

Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day, a day for the widows and family of dead soldiers to place flowers on the graves of their loved ones.  But it wasn't originated in the North, no, the first such commemoration was held a year after the war ended in Columbus, Georgia and designated Confederate Decoration Day.  The dead soldiers so honored were Georgians who had died fighting for their homeland during Sherman's March through to the Peach State, obliterating everything on his way to the sea.  The widows who organized the event also placed flowers on the graves of any Union dead also buried there, for they knew that they did what they did for their cause.  They knew that young men fought the war for their homes and families, not due to any particular political persuasion or social goal.  Their kindness in honoring Union dead was also noted in Northern newspapers and lauded as a great effort to end animosity in the new time of peace.  Had Abraham Lincoln lived, the reunification effort would have been much easier.

Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant became good friends after the war with great respect for one another.  General Joe Johnston, the commander of the Army defending Atlanta against Sherman's wrath, stood in the cold rain to pay respect to Sherman's funeral procession as it passed by at a later time.  He came down with pneumonia and died shortly thereafter, but showed his respect by his presence.  Why can't we do the same today?

It was only two years after the Southern initiation of Confederate Decoration Day that the United States initiated a special day for those who perished, basing it on a suggestion by General John Logan, a wounded Union veteran and head of the Grand Army of the Republic, a commemorative group of Union veterans.  General Logan saw great value in such a commemoration and, despite a few groans, acknowledged that they would be creating a day that was started early by Southerners.  The seeds of our current holiday, Memorial Day, were sown.

I find it sad that so many think we can just ignore the truth of the Civil War and try and put a biased pall across all things historical.  Yes, the Civil War was not our finest hour, but it was real and should never be erased from our memory.  And to destroy statues and symbols from those on the losing side, men who loved their homes and families just like their opponents, is shallow and sad.  Men and boys in the mid-nineteenth century had much closer ties to their beloved home state than they did to a federal government.  And for America to judge their actions by the social atmosphere of a time one hundred and fifty years later is simply ludicrous.  We learn from history; it teaches us how to correct mistakes by showing what came with those mistakes.  To destroy it with political correctness does just the opposite.

The Civil War happened and it was real and we need to remember it as we strive to make America better.  Germany hasn't destroyed her concentration camps.  They want to remember them so that they don't repeat the same things again.  We should be grown up enough to do the same with our monuments, representing real history in a different era.

Is Kim Jong-un an Early Arrival in Singapore?

5/29/2018

PictureWill the real Kim please stand up?
So, the on again, off again summit between President Trump and North Korean strongman Kim Jong-un is on again and some in Singapore are reporting that Kim is already in Singapore, talking to tourists, feeding his face and obviously enjoying the opulence and richness that is today's Singapore.  No, wait, it's not the real Kim, it's a satirist, proving that in a crazy and mixed-up world, fun can be made of nearly anything.  Laughter is always a good thing as a stress reliever, so why not?

Apparently the man involved calls himself Howard X, he speaks excellent English and he is surprising people on the streets when he walks up to talk with them.  His comments about Singapore should be seen as a great Chamber of Commerce ad as he says Singapore has fast internet, the food is great and there is lots of money.  The only mistake with his comments were in the actual quote, where he prefaced the praise by saying otherwise it would be just like Pyongyang.  From the looks of that city in the impoverished country thanks to Kim, I think not.  But he's playing Little Kim, so what else would we expect him to say?  So why is he really here and what are his plans?

Well, the word coming out is that he will soon be joined by his good friend Donald Trump, actually another satirist named Dennis Alan in that role and they plan to satirize the entire summit.  It should be a real "pip," and in the meantime he's going to eat, drink and be merry as he gets to know the people of the modern Asian city-state up close and personal.

Hey, Howard, if you want to really pull a good one, why not saunter on up to whoever comes to Singapore from CNN to cover the talks?  I'll bet you could fool them into believing you and your partner in fun were the real deal and then they could once again make a fool of themselves for the world to see.  Just sayin'....  I thought something light and different would be a good topic for the beginning of a short week and a wet day.  Now go make a great day of it, whatever the weather where you are.

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN: The Greatest Gift They Could Give

                                                                                         MEMORIAL DAY: 2018

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.       - John 15:13 (ESV)

Today is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend with the official holiday falling tomorrow, the last Monday in May. It's a day of remembrance and thanks, a day when all good Americans honor those who fell in battle in the many wars that America has fought.  Just as the verse above from the Gospel of John says, there is no greater gift that can be given than to lay down a life for friends.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans, many really still boys, answered the call of their nation in time of need.  Those who never returned went on their journey knowing what might await them, yet they courageously gave their lives so that we could remain free.  All Americans need to understand that, recognize that, and honor them on this day which is meant for them and their memory.

Now we Christians and all other good people of this country don't want war.  We don't seek it, yet generation after generation we answer the call of our country when it is necessary.  I hope that everyone will honestly pray that war can be avoided whenever possible but, at the same time, we have to recognize that as long as Satan is free to roam through the airways of earth, war will happen on occasion. Evil infects the soul of some and it begets evil in their actions.  War is just one of the outcomes and Christians know that the only real solution and end to war will come when Christ Jesus returns to rule the earth.  Until that time, we must continue to try and find peaceful solutions, but never be afraid to fight if the cause is just and right.

At my little country church, tomorrow we will begin service by inviting members to give the name, service branch and conflict of someone who was dear to them who departed this life due to war. After each name is announced, the bell is tolled once in his or her honor, and it is a very touching and moving experience, coupled with the singing of patriotic hymns that meet the occasion.  Whatever your way to honor those killed by war, I hope you will take the time to honor them.  After all, they are our true heroes since they never came home.  They gave the ultimate sacrifice and we should always be grateful for their gift of their lives for our freedom.

Dear Lord,  We thank you for inspiring us to honor these heroes on a special day with your guidance and love.  Help us to learn from the mistakes that have so often caused horrific wars and try and find peaceful solutions to avoid them.  But also keep us strong and courageous to stand for what is right and good when we must.  We know that until you banish Satan from his perch on earth, war will never be permanently eliminated.  We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Our Savior and Lord, Amen.

On North Korea: Making the Right Call

PictureNK: Living in the Dark Ages
Listening to the mainstream talking heads, it was amazing to hear the glee on so many voices as they droned on about Trump's strategy to engage with North Korea being a failure.  It's as if they want America to fail as long as Trump is the President, while they basked in the glow of President Obama as he tore the country down.  It shouldn't be a surprise, however, for the degree of animosity directed toward our President is becoming more and more unhinged while he continues to undo the socialistic "stuff" that Obama worked so hard it install.  We shouldn't have been surprised, for that was the message of Obama's dream to "Transform the United States of America."  As Americans finally "wise up" to that plan, they show their objection to it more prominently every day.

Despite the media glee over Korea, Trump is handling the situation in a masterful way.  He knew that the chances of the North actually coming to the table were limited at best, yet he wanted to offer them the opportunity to enter the modern world if they would only operate by reasonable means of decency toward their own people and the safety of the world.

Kim Jong-un is a third generation thug who has spent what meager resources he has to try and threaten the world and America ever since the end of the Korean War and he has gotten away with it.  Every time he or his family predecessors in power  made threats of aggression, be they today's nuclear activities or other, America provided incentives if they would stop, yet they took the incentives and then violated the agreements.  We gave them billions in food and technology aid to improve life in that country, only to watch them thumb their nose at America repeatedly.

I remember President Bill Clinton giving a speech saying that his provision of billions of dollars in aid would result in the end of the threat by North Korea for all time, yet it surfaced again quickly.  And it wasn't just to Democratic leaders, George W. Bush made the same misjudgments and, of course, Obama continued on that path as the North enriched their nuclear capacity while her hungry people were reduced to eating grass.  Torture and all forms of pain and suffering continued as the order of the day and young Kim even made a public display of killing one of his very own relatives by strapping him to a bomb and watching the explosion literally blow him to bits.

And then along came Donald Trump, a businessman with lots of international experience in dealing with many unsavory types and he decides to change the story.  After watching the bellicose Kim continue to fire off rockets to test delivery capabilities for a nuclear warhead, all headed toward or over Japan, our ally, the President decided enough was enough. Responding with a show of force, he then offered Kim a seat at the table to discuss ending his nuclear ambitions in return for the opportunity to become part of the world community. There is no doubt that Trump would economically help him do so, but such help would come with tough measures unlike his immediate predecessors.  The old Reagan "trust but verify" concept of action would be absolute and the verification would be ongoing, not lip service that was never to be really enforced.requirement would be and absolute requirement with routine oversight.  If Kim wants to act like a sensible man and bring his people out of mire and the darkness (see satellite picture at the top), he must behave.

When, after agreeing to a meeting, Kim reneged on the preparatory stages with silence and continued to talk about America as a nation that should not be trusted, Trump just pulled the plug, saying that Kim would get no quarter acting that way.  Trump did what a good leader would do, yet still left the door open if Kim wants to cooperate.  And Trump also tied the actions taken by Kim to China, since Kim's posture changed after his recent state visit to Peking.

Will a meeting ultimately be held?  We don't know, but we do know that our President will put our nation first in any decision or action.  Unlike some before him, that is his prime responsibility. You made the right call at this time, Mr. President, and I salute you for it.

Is Today "Showdown Thursday" in Our Nation's Capital?

PictureCongressman Devin Nunes (R-CA)
Today at "High Noon," a meeting will be held between two Republicans, House Intelligence Committee Chairman  Devin Nunes and House Oversight and Government Affairs Chairman Trey Gowdy and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein concerning the rule of law and Congress' constitutional rights.  Since Congress is  as a co-equal branch of government with the Execuitive and Judicial branches, the two Congressmen want to discuss their request for information regarding the long-lived Trump campaign investigation and reported infiltration by an FBI "mole."  The meeting was set up by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly at the request of President Trump.  Trump supports the demands and understands the frustration of the two House committee chairman with the delays by both the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in releasing information that Congress is entitled to receive.

Rosenstein will be joined by FBI Director Christopher Wray and selected staff briefers from the DOJ and FBI.  Chief of Staff Kelly, the initiator of the meeting, will also be in attendance as will Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.  The expectation on the part of the two House committee chairman is that the information they seek should be released.  If this is just another stalling tactic by Rosenstein, who has had run-ins with the both chairmen in the past, things could get ramped up in an adverse way very fast.

Rosenstein seems to be misguided in his view that Trump and his supporters are trying to extort information from the DOJ and that is likely to come up at the meeting. First of all, nowhere in the Constitution does it designate a Department of Justice, that was created by a law originating in Congress and located, of course, in the Executive Branch, which Trump now leads.  Funding for the agency and its mission comes from Congress, originating in House appropriations passed by law, so Congress definitely has oversight responsibility for the mission.  This means that the House has every right to the information they seek and if they don't get it, impeachment of offending officials is well within their prerogative.

The President also has authority to declassify any document if he wishes and what's really sad here is that the documents appear to not warrant being classified. Rather, Rosenstein et al are using the designation to protect themselves and that, if proven true, warrants removal from office.  When we use federal office for devious means and to protect personal interests and not the interests of those who pay the bills, we have run off the rails.

Oh, and for those concerned about Chuck Schumer's whining about how the process should be non-partisan, a second meeting is scheduled with Rosenstein which will be attended by the majority and minority leaders of the both bodies of Congress and well as the House and Senate Intelligence Committee chairmen.   The Nunes and Gowdy meeting was scheduled separately since the two individual chairmen have complained directly to the DOJ about the procedure; bringing a large audience in on it would likely lead to attempts by some to hijack the meeting as well see so often in Washington these days.

Will the gloves come off and the fireworks fire up in the Justice Department today? Stay tuned; it's going to get more interesting and turn more critical real soon.  Stay on it, Congressmen, you are doing the right thing by seeking the truth.  Only the truth will set America free.

The Intelligence Community Assessment on Trump: A Deeply Flawed Document

5/23/2018

Picture
Former CIA Director John Brennan has been in the news a lot lately in a very uncharacteristic manner for an intelligence professional.  Most intelligence officials, active or not, normally like to avoid the limelight for obvious self-security reasons, but Brennan is blabbing like a South American parrot.  Pay close attention to his remarks about President Trump and Russian collusion and it becomes clear he is in panic-mode as more information comes out about his role in creating a story out of nothing.  When falsehood is substituted for truth, it becomes hard to keep the story straight, not knowing what is true and what is not.

Remember when the story broke that Trump had colluded with the Russians and that a dossier had been found document activities by Trump in Moscow frequently referred to as the "golden showers dossier." Well, when questioned before Congress later Brennan said that report had never been verified and that it had not been used as part of the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) of Trump's Russian collusion activities.  Now we find out that not only did the document, prepared by British agent Christopher Steele and based upon false information, make its way into the report but it was used in briefings by Brennan to then President Obama. Also remember that it has been proved that Steele was paid through by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee via a legal firm at their request. So, Brennan has some explaining to do and he very well could face serious charges himself, charges that would be felonies, punishable by jail time.

This same ICA was used as a basis for issuance of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against members of the Trump campaign for surveillance and data gathering, something that would never have been authorized if federal agents had told the judge the truth about the basis in the assessment.  Brennan knew the document was faulty as did James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, James Comey of the FBI and the "top dogs" at the Department of Justice. Not only that, but the decision to use the document was made by the FBI, the DOJ and the DNI and a select group of others. What's really notable about that is that the National Security Agency (NSA), headed by Admiral Mike Rogers, did not concur with its use, saying it was clearly flawed.

Interesting, don't you think?  And now we are finally coming to the point where the truth is starting to trickle out and the holdovers at the DOJ and FBI and now, both Comey and Clapper, are becoming unglued along with Brennan.  I guess the possibility of actually serving hard time for crimes against the nation don't look like very much fun, do they?

Now nothing is ever certain in politics and Washington but let's hope that the scab comes off the wound and it gets thoroughly cleaned and heals. American deserves much better than this.

GET THE SPIRIT: Turn a Gloomy Monday Into a Light and Bright Day

5/21/2018

Picture
Here in North Florida, we've come into the rainy season again and this year is starting out like the past one, only a little earlier. Heavy rain is falling, then it lets up for a while and then pours again.  The sky remains darkly overcast, which adds a gloomy pall over the area.

All who live in the area hope that it's not an indication of a repeat of 2017. Last year was a monster of a rain year, breaking many records with heavy rain nearly daily from June through August, topped off with a direct hit from Hurricane Irma, dropping another ten to fifteen inches of water.  No one wants a repeat but, the fact is, we have no control over that.  So, don't dwell on the things that may never happen but on the things that we can do something about.

Now today being a Monday, a day that some call "Blue," it would be very easy to allow ourselves to sink into gloom in weather like this.  But what is the good of that?  And how does it help you through your work and day? Well, it doesn't, so I want to offer a better solution.  Open your heart and let the Holy Spirit shine within you.  It's a beautiful world, as beautiful as we care to make it, and it's in our power to do so by remembering the love and grace that gave us life to live.  It's no fun going around moping, whining and frowning and, besides, it puts us in a framework where others really don't want to be around us.

So, cheer up, put a smile on your face and let the Spirit shine through us to everyone we come in contact with.  A cheerful heart and a kind soul is a winner wherever you go.  Get that furrow off your brow before it seals its place forever and live like it is a perfect day, for we only go around once in this life.  If we live it like we love it, everyone we come in contact will be positively impacted by the "vibes" w project and it will brighten their day as well.  Our day will be more productive and time will just fly by.  And just think, another exciting weekend will come and we'll enjoy it even more after completing a positive week.

The Spirit is alive and it lives within us.  Bring it alive in life and watch a new countenance envelop us and all that we do.  Have a great day out there.

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN: Ultimate Sovereignty

5/19/2018

Picture
The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.       - Psalm 103:19 (ESV)

We Americans like to think of ourselves as citizens of a sovereign nation, or at least the majority of us do, and it’s as it should be. After all, God gave us that power through the gift of free will.  That free will is just as it sounds, free, yet He wants us use it to love Him and obey His Commandments with love in our hearts for all mankind, not selfish desires and cravings.

America does indeed have a God-given right to sovereignty, meaning she sets the rules and standards for citizenship and has the power to enforce it.  A sovereign nation in the earthly sense is just that, sovereign unto itself, not subject to edicts and commands from any other earthly land or leader.  Only God has the right to interject His purview should he so desire, but to date the free will gift is left to our good and/or bad choices.

But our rights to sovereignty as a nation, any nation, has no comparison to the sovereignty possessed by our Creator, God Almighty, for God has the power to do as he wants, regardless of how we think.  And the things he does are based upon goodness and light, yet he does allow Evil Spirits to run free on earth until the time comes when he decides to send His Son back to claim complete sovereignty over the Father’s creation. And when that time comes, Jesus will rule over the earth from the City of God, Jerusalem, for one thousand years.

So, what should that mean to us Christians who are Americans?  Well, it means that for whatever time that our free will allows us to make choices, right or wrong, we should always opt to use our\n national sovereignty as a power for good under the guidance of God.  For God is the true and ultimate sovereign over all lands and people on this earth.  Some of us know it and some of us refuse to recognize it, but when that day comes for the Evil One to be banished and Jesus returns with the blazing introduction of trumpets resounding, God’s sovereignty will be fully established.

Those who believe will enter the Kingdom with joy and glory in the beauty they see and behold.  And what about the others?  Well, let’s just say that it won’t be a joyous occasion but one thing we know is it will be permanent, everlasting.  We must not waste our free will choice while we are still able to make it.  Choose wisely, my friends, choose wisely, it's entirely up to each of us individually.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the gift of free will and help us to use it wisely and choose your way to follow.  We want to enter your Kingdom when life on earth is done, not find ourselves mired in darkness and sorrow.  Keep us strong so that we may win the glorious prize of Salvation through your love and grace, Amen.

HOROWITZ: DOJ and FBI Receive Criminal Referral on Hillarygate

5/18/2018

PictureIt makes a lot of difference, Hillary
Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael Horowitz has completed his review of the Hillary email investigation by the DOJ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He has  determined that officials from both organizations were complicit in violating federal criminal statutes.

Mr. Horowitz is referring the findings to a United States Attorney in Utah, John Huber, for necessary action.  Mr. Huber was hand-picked by Attorney General Jeff Sessions because he is highly qualified but also not working within the Washington community. Both men are Democrats and were appointed initially by President Obama but both have an excellent reputation for being straight shooters, not yes men for the political flavor of the day.

Now we don't know the details other than the fact that some serious charges are likely to go forward, but we do know that names like Comey, McCabe, Yates, Rosenstein, Strzock, Page, Lynch, Ohr and many more have been subject to careful review by Horowitz and his investigators in recent months.  I wouldn't be surprised if the holdovers in leadership roles that are still actively working in their old jobs try to slow walk the release of the report.  Congress, however, is not in a good mood over this after having so many delays, so I would anticipate it picking up pace.  After all, the public has a right to know since, in the end, the public foots the bill for everything the government does, both the good and the bad.  Sadly, the government screws up most of the things that it touches.

These are strange times, my friends, and whatever has transpired from within government to try and remove a duly elected President with no evidence of any wrongdoing needs to be stamped out once and for all.   And while this particular investigation is about Hillary and her emails and her exoneration, I don't believe this subject can be reviewed without plenty coming out on the "Russia thing" as well, for that, too, evolved from Hillary's defeat and her desire to get even.  Oh, yes, she always wants to get even.

As the old saying goes, "Something is rotten in the State of Denmark," and I guess Denmark now occupies Washington, D.C.  No wonder Trump wants to drain the swamp.  I just hope he has enough bleaching cleanser to remove the scum that's left behind when this is done.
