Praise the Lord: An Amazing Easter Happening in Eastern Syria

3/30/2016

With all the shenanigans in politics and the celebration of the Resurrection this past weekend, most of us missed hearing about an amazing event which ended in Eastern Syria on Easter Sunday.  The ancient Christian city of Palmyra, a historical locale which was captured by ISIS over six months ago was finally freed. Her Christian people, including her women and children, were victims of the worst kinds of violence including rape, murder and slavery during their period of forced captivity or else they had fled into the mountains hoping for help.

The city of Palmyra was previously allowed to continue with their Christian traditions under Basher Assad and was noted for its architectural marvels.  The Assad regime never threatened the city and citizens had been allowed to live their lives peacefully.  But after the Arab Spring, where we find more and more evidence of the involvement of  the Obama Administration and Secretary of State Clinton in its creation, terror began to be threatening the town routinely.  With the onset of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), not the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) which Obama uses because it includes Israel under their territory, the city has been sacked, most of its beautiful architecture has been ruined, and the United States has done nothing to end the horror and free these Christian people.

So what happened on Easter Sunday, Resurrection Sunday, that was so amazing?  The Russian military, not the Americans, finally drove the last vestige of this Islamic terrorist organization out of the city.  And while the city will require much rebuilding, it is of note that the first phase of return to life for the Christian community has been accomplished.  And that brings up the question: Why did America do nothing while also not allowing the thousands of her refugees the opportunity to come to a Christian nation, opting instead for more and more Muslims, many of whom can not be vetted?

I think it's obvious that the current Administration has no interest whatsoever in helping Christians under siege and facing horror and death daily in the Middle East.  It's hard to escape that conclusion, after all, our nation defers to the United Nations on determining who is a legitimate refugee and the UN bureaucratic arm for this effort is clearly biased against Christians in its organizational make-up.  Not only that, but reports are leaked daily showing that Christians are fearful of any UN support since those few who have entered the UN refugee camps, as well as many decent Muslim women and children, have been seriously abused.  It's as if ISIS is a UN front which, come to think of it, very well could be.  Could it be that the entire horrific situation is just a way to generate world anguish which in turn results in the UN being considered an answer to the problem as in the New World Order.  I guess time will tell, but be vigilant and pay attention and the truth of what is really going on will come out.   No matter what attempts are take to silence it, the truth always ends up the winner in the end.

But at least we can be thankful to the Russian forces who turned the tide in Palmyra.  Whatever their ultimate goal or reason, it did have a very positive result in this case and it happened finally on Easter Sunday.  Truly the Lord does work in mysterious ways.

So What Do We Do About Crony-Capitalism?  Tuesday at 10:30 am

Last week on North Florida Writer Live we talked about crony-capitalism and the threat it poses to civilization worldwide.  It is becoming clear that large corporations, international in scope, are gaining more and more of a foothold in a relationship with governments across the globe.  These corporations have formed a bond with government, effectively screening out other competitors for business and stifling small business to the detriment of the people who depend on these other businesses for their work and livelihood.

Nobody is more representative of this disgraceful winner take all process than Tom Donahue, President of the United States Chamber of Commerce and a major proponent of this trend in America.  From support of open borders, to picking winners and losers in the business market, to opting for international trade agreements in their best interest but not in the interest of the nation as a whole, Donahue is found in the middle of it all.  And it is destroying not just America but freedom of choice the world over.

Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. we will take a big step and discuss how it can be stopped.  One hint is that in this election year we must elect an outsider President, someone who has the willpower and the business acumen to see through this fog of corrupt relationships and re-institute freedom in the marketplace.  It won't be easy, and the opposition will go down only after a fight to the end, but if we are to return America to sanity and help the rest of the world economy to see the light of what good capitalism can do, it must be done.

Can Trump do it?  What about Cruz?  Is there anyone else on the scene who is capable of leading such a mission?  And what will be the first steps that must be taken to right the ship by initiating real economic measures that boost business based upon risk and smarts, not primarily because of political connections?  My frequent guest Mark Collier will join us for another rousing discussion.  We hope that you will join us.  And remember, the show will be available on demand upon completion of the live broadcast.

Easter Sunday on Social Media: An Unmitigated Disaster

3/28/2016

Picture
I lost a friend on social media during Holy Week due to all of the political infighting going on.  Oh, I never met him in person but we talked on numerous occasions, in fact we participated on a few blogtalkradio shows where our views were quite similar.  But with the unusual candidate situation faced this year in Republican circles, he just couldn't respect my wishes regarding my candidate endorsement and repeatedly told me I was wrong openly on Facebook, going so far as to accuse me of drinking the proverbial Kool-Aid and supporting someone who could not be acceptable to God. I merely asked that he "cool it" for Holy Week but he even turned that into snark in his return remarks.

I drew the line at that point, saying that he was of course entitled to his views as was I but he just kept pushing until I said I was done.  Now I know he is highly passionate about his candidate, but each of us can reach our own conclusions and it doesn't mean that one of us is wrong or evil, it just means we disagree on who would be better in these trying days for America.  And I am sorry that he felt that way, for I have always felt that all politicians have significant faults and are sinners, both the one I support and his favorite, yet somehow we followers need to draw the line as to how far we take things.  And I know that some are more outspoken while others might be more reserved, some might say almost pioused in their egotism, but I think there is room for all and, after all, again they are also all sinners.  None of them is anywhere near approaching the level of Jesus Christ and I think it's important for us to always remember that. When we substitute mortal man's judgement for the Holy One's we are always headed for trouble.

But on this Holy Week this minor situation made me take time to review what I see on the sites about politics, particularly Facebook and Twitter which I am most familiar with, and it made me realize that I want to divorce myself from the sarcasm and the downright nastiness that so many of us are exhibiting toward others.  Frankly, I can't exclude myself from that but I want to end it. And even more sadly, much of it is directed at those with whom we share many common values, we just happen to disagree over a specific candidate. I think when we do this we serve to divide ourselves in situations which might often lead to our own detriment come election time.  Snark, sarcasm and just downright ugliness can sometimes drive those people away from you that you are trying to bring to the cause and, candidly, it seems that many good candidates might be losing potential supporters due to the behavior of their own support team.  Not only that, but when you project a very narrow view in politics, you're very likely to get a very narrow support base.  There are many people looking for the right candidate and we should help them decide in a supportive way not by driving them off.

So from here on out on social media I will try and limit my remarks to my views based upon what I believe, not snark and gossip being spread so rapidly throughout the sites. I will still write my blogs about God, country and politics, but my short bits will be less sarcastic and more just a simple statement of what I believe. It's much more appropriate to say "I don't think your premise is correct" than to say "I think you are an idiot".  And besides, if the Holy Week means to me as a Christian what I profess to say it does, then I, like so many others, need to live accordingly.

There, I've gotten that off my chest and now will strive to do things better and I hope each of you will have a wonderful day and week ahead. Remember to put the Spirit of Christ that was ever so present over the last few days first and foremost in your life always. He lives and it is now paramount that we live for Him. God bless you all.

THE DAY AFTER HE WAS CRUCIFIED: THEY WERE NUMB

3/26/2016

Picture
Imagine what it must have been like the day after Jesus' crucifixion for the Disciples, the Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene and all of those who loved and followed Him.  They were likely numb, having difficulty believing what had happened the day prior and worried about what would happen to them now that their Savior was gone.

The word was out that the soldiers would be looking for them, likely wanting to destroy any vestige of the group which upset the social order of the Temple leaders and others who had been instrumental in killing the Savior.  The High Priest and other powerful Jews were anxious to have the Jewish nation forget about Jesus so that their life of power and prestige could once again go on uninterrupted by God's truth.

Most of Jesus' followers were in hiding, trying to figure out what to do next and how to cope with the loss of their leader.  Even though Jesus had told them what was coming, they really didn't understand understand the gravity of his message and it would take a while to really sink in.  They gathered in small groups and shared their grief and anxiety, wishing that the Son of God was still with them to guide their way.

As I think about that stressful time, it is impossible not to look at it from our perspective today when the world is once again in major turmoil.  Even though we have been taught, pray and worship Him and read the Good Book, we mortals still have serious doubts, doubts which require us to dig within ourselves to keep the faith alive and growing.  Some have even tried to substitute dogma for the truth, even going so far as to say that Jesus was just nothing more than a radical socialist as evidenced by the way He lived.  They cite arguments like giving up riches for the poor, stating that socialist government policies are just enacting the same things that Jesus taught.

But we must realize the fallacy and identify what is different in practice between that and  true Christianity and here it is in a nutshell.  Jesus was about love and free will, not the force and power of government power.  Jesus truly wanted the poor taken care of, but he wanted it to come from the heart of each of us as true Christians, doing so because we wanted to do so and not because the government dictated it by force.  After all, belief in Jesus by faith is voluntary as are the works performed to please Him.  We do them because we love Him and want to please Him, showing Him that we love our fellow man and want to act upon that love..   It means we've made the right choices with our free will, something quite different than giving up what we have under the threat of force.  Never forget that, for government authority is only man made.  It is not like the authority of God that is above everything and exceeds everything in this world.

And, of course, the followers of Jesus will on tomorrow so many years ago finally understand the message of returning from the dead that Jesus taught them and they will then be one step forward to facing the imposing task which He has given them, the task of spreading the word of Jesus' love and grace throughout the entire world.  We, too, must do so, with love in our hearts and by making the right choices to do those things that He would have us do because we want to please Him, not because some earthly authority is holding a gun to our head.

Praise His Holy Name and remember to thank Him for what we have.  He truly does LIVE.

A Day of Sorrow and Death

3/25/2016

Picture
On this Good Friday 2015, it is important that we remember the pain, suffering and agonizing death that Jesus went through for us.  So often we Christians like to limit our focus on the goodness and the love of God and how He is always nearby to help us.  But that help comes with a requirement, the requirement that we open our hearts, believe in Him and put Him first in all that we do.  For many of us, sometimes that just doesn't seem convenient in this crazy modern world.  But our convenience isn't why He died.  He died so that we might be afforded the opportunity to live with Him forever.

That's why Good Friday and what it means is so important for us to remember.  God gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, the task of dying an excruciating death for us by carrying the  burden of all of our sins, past, present and future to death with Him. it was a very heavy burden, something that no one else could have handled.  And at the moment his beaten and battered body gave up life, we were forgiven for all sin.  Think about that carefully and you'll understand that this gracious gift was given for us with a price.  For like Jesus paid the price for us, the ultimate price, we must be willing to pay the price of opening our heart, letting the Holy Spirit in and believing in Our Savior through faith and by showing that faith by following Him for the rest of our lives.  And that is really not a price at all, but a precious gift that we should graciously accept.

On this Good Friday I hope you will tune in to this weekend's Sunday Morning Coming Down devotional.  The title: Death and Darkness to Victory.  We will start with the pain and suffering of this dark and deadly Friday and then move to the victory that followed on the third day, when Jesus was resurrected from the tomb.  And that should call for a celebration by all of us, the celebration of life over death, for as the beautiful hymn goes: He Lives.  And He makes life worth living for that very reason alone.

The show will go live this day at a time when the turmoil of today's thunderstorms allow an opportunity to broadcast, after which it will be available on line the entire Easter weekend.  Have a great weekend with Christ and God bless you all.

Special Maundy Thursday Broadcast: Sunday Morning Coming Down

3/23/2016

PictureJesus and His Disciples: The Last Supper
Today is Maundy Thursday and a special Sunday Morning Coming Down devotional is running on North Florida Writer Live to celebrate the significance of this day to our Christian faith.  In honor of Holy Week any remaining broadcasts to be scheduled this week will be on the Holy Week theme.

Many significant events took place on this day those many years ago.  The Savior gathered together His Disciples for their last meal together before his death, he taught them how to remember Him through participation in Holy Communion, and Judas Iscariot was released by Jesus to do his deed of forsaking Him with the Jewish High Priest.  It was a night when Jesus also prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane in mortal anguish, knowing what was about to happen and carrying the burden of the world's sin on his back.

We'll also quickly run through a timeline of what took place prior to Thursday on Holy Week as we prepare for the horrible death on the Cross to come on Good Friday, the emptiness and loss of Saturday for Jesus' followers and the ultimate victory which comes through His Resurrection on Sunday.

We hope you'll join us for the message, good Christian music, a short scripture and prayer as we remember His grace for sinners like us.  The show is available 24/7 online at the following link:

Holy Week Wednesday: Jesus and His Disciples Rest

3/23/2016

Picture
This day, Wednesday of Holy Week was one where Jesus and His Disciples spent most of the day at rest, in prayer and in small group discourse.  The day was spent in Bethany, probably at the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, a family very close to them.  Remember Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead earlier and He was dearly loved by all of the townspeople.

Imagine what was going through Jesus' mind during this short period of rest in the most fateful week of His life.  He entered Jerusalem in triumph on Sunday, overturned the money-changer's tables Monday for turning God's House, the Temple, into a bazaar.  Then on Tuesday the Chief Priests and scribes challenged Him in all that He said, clearly hoping to goad Him into committing blasphemy in His responses, after which he delivered His startling discourse about the future and what would happen to the world to His Disciples on the Mount of Olives.  And now, with time to ponder what would be taking place, He likely was being approached by satan (notice the use of the small s since he is not worthy of capitalization in his name) in His a failed attempt to keep Jesus from following through on His mission.  After all, if Jesus failed to carry out the task for which He was sent to earth, satan would be safe and freedom from sin through Jesus would not be attained.

Surely Jesus prayed to God asking that He be spared while also realizing that God would not relent on the task. So His mind was likely troubled by human thoughts while He had to maintain a steady appearance of calm for His flock.  It had to be very difficult to do that since the others anticipated a typical passover experience while Jesus knew it would be one that would change the world.

Turning in for a quiet night, it is certain that He pondered tomorrow's Last Supper, His presentation of Holy Communion as a remembrance of Him which He would teach his followers on that occasion as well as what would follow in the Garden and after His capture and trial in the morning hours of Good Friday.  We must remember that while He was both a Man and God, his mortal side was weak, yet His godly side was strong enough to stay the course even though He knew in advance exactly what would take place.

The script is next headed for the crucial stages that we are all taught routinely as tenets of the Christian faith, yet we still hunger for the words which define us, encourage us in our faith and lead to our eternity.  How fortunate we are to have an Eternal Father who loves us so much to do these things for we mere mortals.  We are truly blessed.

Holy Week Tuesday: The Questions Get Trickier and the Betrayal Begins

"Blind guides!  You strain your water so you won't accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel.  What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious laws and you Pharisees.  Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the the cup but inside you are filthy - full of greed and self-indulgence."
                                    - Matthew 23:24-25

On the third day of Holy Week Jesus again traveled from Bethany to Jerusalem and entered the Temple.  After his turning over of the tables of the money-changers on Monday, He knew that the leaders of the Temple would challenge him directly and attempt to force Him to say something for which they could accuse Him of blasphemy against the Law.  But Jesus took a different approach, He spoke of the wisdom and love of God and instead pointed out the hypocrisy of the leaders who used ceremony and outer appearances to hide what they really were doing.  And the leaders, realizing that many of their people agreed with Jesus, and knowing within themselves that He was telling the truth, decided that this discourse would not lead to their desired result and they again backed off.  But they had identified a weakness in one of His followers, Judas Iscariot, who was disillusioned with Jesus because he wanted Jesus to change the world right now by banishing Rome.  Judas really didn't grasp the message of the future which Jesus was preaching.

That afternoon Jesus and His Disciples left Jerusalem and went to the Mount of Olives directly east of the Temple.  There the Savior delivered what has come to be called the Olivet Discourse, a prophecy about the coming destruction of the Temple in the future and the end of the age.  The entire discourse can be found in Matthew 21:23 - 24:51.  It is also covered in other Gospels and parallels portions of the The Revelation by Saint John the Divine.

After a busy day, Jesus and His followers grew weary and returned to Bethany for a meal and the night.  While this was happening, Judas finally met with the High Priest and negotiated a plan to identify Jesus to the Temple guards in the near future.  He would pinpoint a time and place for the guards to come where Jesus would be with all of the Disciples, including Judas, and point Him out for them.  The script is right on schedule and Jesus knows what is coming, yet He is committed to finishing the task that The Father has given Him to do. The Greatest Story Ever Told will continue tomorrow.  Praise His Holy Name!

The Day After Palm Sunday

And they came to Jerusalem.  And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.  And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple.  - Mark 11:15-16

After Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, he made a walk through of the Temple and observed what was taking place.  He spoke little, not drawing unnecessary attention to himself, and then finding it late in the day He and His Disciples returned to Bethany to spend the night.

On Monday morning he returned to the Temple and observed the mercantile operation that was underway. The Temple, a holy place for worship, had been turned into a commercial bazaar with money-changers abounding and loud haggling over pricing of goods for sale.  Jesus was outraged and proceeded to overturn the tables of the money changers, scattering the contents throughout the hall.  He spoke of the lack of respect and blasphemy in the use of God's House in this way.   And while the Chief Priest and the scribes could have used his outburst as an excuse for capturing Him, they also knew that what He said was correct and it would put them in a very bad public light. And they didn't want Him to use this against them with the people who were listening aptly to what He said, so they decided to walk away.

Tired from another day of dealing with the sad state of affairs in the Temple and the lack of respect for God shown by these Jewish leaders, he again returned to Bethany for the night.  He also knew that after today's actions the leaders would begin to start directly challenging Him and would try to force Him to say something for which he could be charged with blasphemy, but it still wasn't time according to God's timetable.  He knew that God would direct Him when that moment came.  All of the events, including Judas entering into an agreement with the authorities to betray His Lord, must happen first. He would stick to God's plan even though he dreaded the final chapter.

What power, what Glory and what a gift the King of Kings was preparing to give to us according to the wishes of His Father.  Be thankful that He never faltered along the path. His love of us was that strong and remains so today and it's why we must follow Him if we want salvation.

Palm Sunday: The Triumphant Entry of the King of Kings

3/20/2016

Picture
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet  him, crying out, "Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!"  - John 12:13 (ESV)

On that bright Sunday morning so many years ago, Jesus mounted the donkey colt in the little town of Bethany at the top of the Mount of Olives for the two mile trip into Jerusalem.  The crowds were gathering and approaching, as the news of his arrival had preceded him.  The Kings of Kings, approaching the appointed hour when he would die a most horrible death, chose a lowly donkey as his means of travel.  And instead of fine and rich carpeting for his path, he rode into the City of God on a bed of palm fronds, a fitting symbol for this simple man destined to change the world, not by the power of man made government but by the word of God.

His entry was cheered by thousands, yet the High Priest and his minions watched carefully, threatened by his very presence and plotting in earnest to destroy him when the opportunity came.  That would come on Wednesday when Judas Escariot would betray him for a mere thirty sheckels in coins.  How amazing that God chose to write the script to the Greatest Story Ever Told in such a way, ever mindful that His Son, Jesus Christ, would exemplify simplicity in life, truth and virtue in word and deed, and ultimately leave behind after his death to come the greatest gift that humankind could ever be given: the gift of forgiveness and the opportunity for eternal life.

As we enter another Holy Week with all of the trials, tribulations which culminate in victory on Easter Sunday, remember what was done for us.  For at the moment of Christ's death on Good Friday, each of us, past, present and future are forgiven of our sins.   To accept this wonderful gift, all we need to do is believe in him by faith.  What a wonderful miracle this Man-God has provided for us.  Hallelujah!
