The Trump Day Blog: Pictures are Important at the State of the Union

It's time for the Hump Day is Trump Day blog and and on this Wednesday we're talking about what was shown for the world to see last night in the audience at Donald Trump's first State of the Union address.  The State of the Union address by the President was a good one and he is to be congratulated for a high energy and inspiring description of how he sees America and how he plans to lead us forward.  The President was passionate, optimistic and full of hope and he was very clear.

The only issue that gave me some concern was in the immigration area.  My concern is that the legalization of those who entered the country and stayed illegally, if done first, will open the possibility of a repeat of what happened to Ronald Reagan back in 1986.  The Democrats got their big wish and then the security aspects designed to protect the border never materialized. It's what got us in the mess where we find ourselves and we can't afford to do that again. The President has to make sure that security, including the Wall, are a primary upfront requirement so that a later Congress or President can't violate the nation's trust.

Following are a few of the highlights of what the President's loyal opposition displayed and how they offer Trump and the Republicans some wonderful material for future political campaign ad content.  But first, it's important to put what was seen in a nutshell and it's this: Republicans clapped, jumped on their feet and cheered while the Democrats sat sullen, angry and silent or on occasion booing, even when the President discussed important positive things that are both accurate and good for all Americans and Americans watching noticed. Seventy-five percent of those who tuned in said the speech was good and they liked it, including forty-two percent of Democrats.  That is a huge number and Democrats need to understand that they have swung so far to the Left that even so of their long term voters have had enough. So, here are some of the specifics that were clearly displayed and which I think were disgraceful.

1. Nancy Pelosi. The leader of the minority in the House of Representatives looked dazed and frowned throughout.  I've never seen a party leader, one who used to be Speaker of the House, behave in such a bad way.  But, of late, her left wing views have been ramped up in vitriol to the point where she has trouble making a clear statement. It's as if she is consumed by hate.  Her recent commentary where she said that Trump was trying to "Make America White Again" clearly supports my view.  but no, Nancy, Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" by undoing the things that were done to bring the nation down.
2. When the President mentioned that the black unemployment rate was at the lowest point in history today, the entire Congressional Black Caucus sat stone-faced and silent.  It was as if they want black Americans to be unemployed since it affords them a continued excuse for race baiting in all that they do.
3. Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, the leader of the "open borders at any cost brigade," had a complete meltdown.  When the majority party started chanting "USA, USA,"  Gutierrez could hold himself  down no longer, stomping out of the chamber in an angry huff.  Why would a chant supporting the country they represent upset him so?
4.  Trump used "we" one hundred and twenty nine times, "our" one hundred and four times and "I" only twenty nine times.  Contrast that with the former President at a typical State of the Union speech he made and it is striking. It was clear that Trump sees himself as a President of the people who is an elected leader, not a ruler who, once elected, feels free to inflict his dogma with no other options considered.
5.  Not a single Democrat rose at any time to the mention of God, as in a nation under God, the flag or national anthem or veterans, to name a few.  It is obvious that the current crop of citizens and all that they do is of secondary, if any, concern.  These are not the Democrats that I grew up with and knew and what they represent is clearly alien to the general American citizen.

Now that was just a short listing of some of the negativity which was glowing from the Democratic side of the aisle and it begs this very important question. Will they be willing to work with Trump via compromise?  I really don't think so and that may be a reason why Trump offered them a compromise, which he clearly did in his draft immigration plan. He has shown a willingness to do so by the very nature of the offer, but by their display last night they clearly showed that they have no interest in compromise and now it's been shown for all to see on national TV.  They've been "trumped" again, yet they don't know it yet.

Don't be surprised if you see some of the snippets on video in Republican campaign ads in the 2018 off year elections and in the 2020 Presidential cycle.  They truly offer a treasure trove of options and the Republicans would be silly not to take advantage of it.  And it's not that the Republicans have all the answers for no one does.  But after last night's speech and the Democrats' sad display, I am sure most Americans get it and they now know that the Trump team is not made up of extremists. That terminology clearly applies to the current direction of the Democratic Party. It doesn't inspire, it doesn't want to solve problems and it clearly doesn't think much of the America I love.  I am very confident in saying that it is now becoming clear that a solid working majority of Americans agree with my assessment.

I hope things will change in their outlook  but I don't expect they will. So, instead of wishing for what we may never see, let's Make America Great Again without the Democrats if that's what it takes. God bless America and may she ever be free.

Has California Reached the Last Straw?

1/30/2018

California is well on the way to reaching the last straw, if State Assembly Leader Ian Calderon has his way.  The self described Democrat-Socialist has submitted legislation to limit the use of straws in indoor sit down restaurants.  It is designed to cut back on disposable plastic and straws used in beverages are a significant source of that plastic.  That, in itself, is not the major problem although to me it is still problematic.  But the overbearing issue is how the law, if the proposal passes, is carried out.

Assemblyman Calderon tried to figure out how to make the law effective and work.  But with his liberal logic, he didn't choose the establishment owner with the responsibility, he chose the wait staff instead. So, in addition to the responsibility for serving heavy numbers in a short period of time and keeping orders and bills straight, the lowly food server is responsible for the management of plastic straws.  If a customer asks for a straw, that's okay, but if the server gives a straw to a customer who didn't ask for one,  he's guilty of violating the law.  And the punishment can be up to one thousand dollars per occurrence and even jail time.  You can't make this stuff up.

Now normally I would say that it's not something to worry about, that no legislative body would pass such a bill into law.  But we're talking about California, folks, where hard working business people are leaving in droves and the newcomers come with a hand out, seeking largesse from captive taxpayers.  And the legislature, along with Governor "Moonbeam" Brown have played the lead role in all of that action.  So, don't be surprised if the law is enacted.

We can argue over whether or not a straw law of any type should even be considered, but the fact is that since this law only applies to full service, sit down restaurants, not fast food or cafe establishments, it's purpose is dubious at best.  The desire to cut back on non-degradable garbage in the form of packaging and food utensils is always a good idea, but this one is insane at best.  And the problem with the elimination of straws also ties to cleanliness.  After all, have you ever considered how unsanitary the average cup is, considering who handled it and where their hands have been. Maybe we just need to go back to the old fashioned paper straws that worked so well in the past.

All I can say is that the Hotel California is alive and well in Sacramento.  Just sayin'...   It might be trivial, but remember trends always begin on the Left Coast. Keep your eyes open.

Gloria Allred Calls Out the "Big Bad Wolf" at Walmart

1/29/2018

Have you ever walked into a Walmart or similar discount box store and found certain counters or displays locked?  Of course you have and most of us know that high ticket or high loss items from theft are the ones principally found there.  And, of course, controlled products like guns and ammunition and most electronic equipment are found at the top of the list.  Usually, however, low ticket items are not included unless the store has a particular problem with high theft.

Enter Gloria Allred, the headline hungry California attorney who has attempted to make herself out as the hero of victims everywhere, yet so often fails miserable.  And in her latest attempt, she is leading the charge for Essie Grundy, a black American woman who is suing the huge discount store chain for........wait for it........racial discrimination.   Why?  Because apparently Ms. Grundy found a number of inexpensive black specialty cosmetics and related grooming products under lock and key in her neighborhood Southern California Walmart  even though they had not been locked under glass  at a different store.  Gee, I wonder why she didn't buy the products at the other store?  That, of course,  isn't addressed in the story.

A couple of things are worth note. First, Walmart, as a regular cost containment measure, routinely evaluates their products for likelihood of theft.  High ticket items are, of course, the usual culprits and are found locked everywhere or displayed where they can't be just picked up and moved.  But they also use the automated numbers review to look at all products lines and if they find a serious issue, they take action such as putting them under lock and key.  They are clearly marked concerning how to get help in purchasing them and no one with the ability to pay is turned away from making a purchase.  They are merely applying good security rules to try and eliminate theft, a major problem in any retail establishment.

Secondly, many of the product displays, stocking and control are left to the selling vendor, meaning that they have the responsibility for eliminating pilferage of their own product lines.  You can bet that the company in question will do one of two things.  They will either find a solution to the problem or they will pull it from the shelves.  And likewise, Walmart will do what it must to remain profitable and within its business plan.  They certainly don't want to spend the money for locking, closed display cases unless it makes sense based upon past experience.

Ms. Allred is driven by a different drummer and as one who gets paid for success, the actions she take usually have nothing to do with the law.  They are really about public opinion and its impact on the organization she attacks. She is well aware that big businesses will often pay to resolve a nuisance suit to avoid the high costs and time involved in court actions. It's usually just easier and cheaper, but sometimes they need to hold their ground to send a message.  This is one of those cases.

Walmart serves an important niche in retail, offering lower cost items based upon their high volume for people who can't afford the supposed upscale stores.  Without such an option,  costs would skyrocket everywhere.  Think about that before you swallow the weak arguments of the likes of Ms. Allred. She has her rights to do whatever she wants within the letter of the law but we, the people also have the right to reject them.

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN: Don't Bet on a Deathbed Redemption

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
                              – John 3:36 (ESV)

I remember an afternoon those many years ago while in high school when a bunch of us boys met at the local YMCA to play basketball. School was out that day for a teacher's meeting and we saw a good game as a great way to spend a rather boring day.  We played half court games for several hours, then stopped in the snack bar for a bite to eat and a coke before heading home.  Some of us drove, some took the bus and one rode his motorbike.

Now motorbikes weren't as common back in those days for young folks. Most teens who owned a care had clunker and learned basic mechanics while working hard to mantain it and pay for gas.  But this young man, a very nice young man, had the novelty vehicle of the class and he was also a bit of a daredevil while driving it.  To me, motorbikes really didn't make sense from the standpoint of safety. I always preferred the idea of having some heavy steel between myself and another vehicle, but he just loved it and rode it everywhere.

As we departed and went our separate ways for home, most of us listened to the local rock and roll station which had quick news quips at the top of the hour.  Before arriving home, the news came on and reported a wreck of a car and motorcycle not far from downtown.  We momentarily thought of my friend, but then as the music came back on the two of us riding together returned to the tunes as most teens of that era would do.

As I walked in to school the next morning and sat down in home room, the morning announcements were made by the principal himself and he told us the bad news.  Our friend had died instantly in that wreck  reported the day before on the radio.  We were all silent and pensive, particularly those of us who were generally the last ones to see him alive. He was living and vibrant on the basketball court and in the snack bar and then, in a flash he was gone.  Apparently, he didn't even see it coming.

I've always remembered that sad event and it is a great example of why we can't wait an hour or a day to make our commitment to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  When you believe He is who the Bible says He is and put your faith in Him for salvation, you are instantly ready to face whatever might befall you in earthly life.  If you ignore it or put it off, well, it's certainly a possibility that you might miss the opportunity to do so and that would be tragic.

He died to forgive us for our sins and offer us the opportunity for Eternal Life if only we accept Him by faith and believe in Him.  Now I don't know much about my young friend ad what he did or did not believe, but I can only pray that he did, for with sudden death the opportunity to do so might be eliminated entirely.  And the question is do we want to take that chance?  I know I don't and that's why I've made the commitment to Him and am glad to speak out and tell that to the world.  I hope many more will make the same decision.  It's a personal decision and we can do with it what we wish, but it must be made in this life.  We must choose wisely and in a timely fashion for we never know when our time will be up.  Don't gamble with the opportunity for Eternity.

Dear Lord, Thank you for giving us forgiveness and with it the opportunity to choose Christ as our Lord and Savior.  Open our hearts, let the Spirit enter and lead us to Him as the Mediator for us with you.  For if we do, we can bask in the warmth and brightness of your love forever.  Amen.

Don't Eat That Sandwich: We Might Be Dooming Ourselves!

1/26/2018

PictureThe Great American Sandwich
I'm always amazed at some of the "crap" that passes for science these days and today I found a story that is right up there with the worst of them.   It seems that a professor at the University of Manchester in the UK has completed a study saying that the sandwich, a staple of diets in the UK, here in America and throughout much of the world is a climate destroyer.

Professor Adisa Azapagic reached that conclusion in her press statement on January 18 in her role as head of the Sustainable Industrial Systems research group for the university. She says the carbon footprint is huge from the making and packaging of the sandwich and it is just another thing that must be changed.  And to make it even worse, she says that major reduction of certain sandwich contents will be necessary, including meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Wow, Professor, you're really leaving us with some great choices, aren't you?  Of course, there's nothing like a tasty alfalfa sprout or tofu sandwich, is there? On the other hand, they'd probably love it in California.

Let's see, in recent years we've been told that "loaded" coffee is bad, but decaf is good and, of course, we all remember when they recommended margarine instead of butter.  That, of course, has gone by the wayside since, think about it, why would you eat something to replace butter that stays pretty solid under heat?

But, now, the sandwich.  We are supposed to sacrifice it for sustainability of the earth, except what good is the earth if its inhabitants are starving to death.  Maybe they just want us to eat grass like the starving people of North Korea who sacrifice their very existence so that a dictator can develop nuclear bombs.

How about we sustain the earth while we sustain the people who live here as well?  No one is going to accept sandwiches without something tasty in them and sandwiches are one of the best ways to feed people under widely varying circumstances.  Furthermore, carbon is a critical element to life itself, so why are we trying to eliminate it?  Not to worry, I'm sure the globalists will come up with a worldwide breathing tax at some point to punish us for breathing.  As time goes on, we can see they don't leave out much else.

Gee, I wonder what the group at Davos would say about no meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.  They would, of course, be highly upset, but then again, the rules don't apply to them.  If they did, there wouldn't be several thousand fuel guzzling jets parked at the airport to take each of these titans back home in an otherwise empty plane.

Let's stop the madness and apply some common sense.  We might start by realizing that science is not, nor has it ever been, a consensus subject. The best way to make sure it returns to its logical basis is to take the politics out of the subject.  If we did, we'd have a lot less professors like the one from Manchester pushing her rot.

A Broken "Field of Dreams"

1/25/2018

Picture
Within the last few days, a beautiful modern day landmark out in Iowa was severely vandalized.  And on the scale of national importance it is nowhere near the top of the list, but it is a beautiful place.  And I'm writing about it today to show just how evil can display itself anywhere and anytime.  The landmark pictured above is the Field of Dreams movie site, the beautiful baseball diamond created for the movie of the same name in the cornfields of Dyersville.

Many of us remember the movie well.  It starred Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta in the story of the Chicago White Sox, nicknamed at the time the "Black Sox" for the scandal that infected the team during a heyday season.  A Midwestern farmer who loved that team years later wanted to see them again and in a dream was told that if he built a quality diamond for them to play on, the team would come to play ball.  It was a great example of combining some truth with fiction to make a riveting tale that was touching to anyone who loves baseball.

The movie site is now a tourist attraction and the owner has preserved and improved it, with events routinely scheduled including some games and it is open to the public daily from 9-6 from April through October.  Thousands of tourists passing through the area routinely visit it and even enjoy playing catch on that now famous field.

But early this week, in the darkness of night, a driver of a big vehicle, likely a truck, decided to ruin the field by driving around and through the infield and turf after a freeze and thaw cycle. Deep ruts were dug into the infield and fixing it will not come fast or cheap with early estimates of fifteen thousand dollars or more to repair.  Custodian Al Steffen said that it is quite possible the sprinkler system has been seriously damaged as well, but that can't be determined until the full spring thaw has come.  And now the owner is thinking seriously about eliminating visitors after hours from stopping by with a fencing and alarm security system added.  He doesn't want to do that since some people come by at strange hours but he obviously wants to protect his investment and make sure that future visitors will be able to see it in excellent shape.

And all this just makes me ask a question.  What is it that makes some people think that damaging a beautiful facility like this is fun?  What possesses them to do that?  After all, this isn't an isolated incident of wanton destruction of property.  I've seen it on the grounds of my local country church as well where four wheelers seem to get joy in tearing up the lawn during rainy season.

Simply put, it's a form of evil, frequently onset on those with an idle mind.  My mother always said that an idle mind was the devil's workshop and that sounds pretty accurate to me.  When we allow ourselves to turn our minds to dark thoughts, dark actions usually follow.  And often it is caused by young people in need of good parental supervision.  But, whatever the case, I would hope that the instigators in some way and fashion see the "light" and turn their thoughts away from destructive darkness.  There is no future when darkness is the focus of your life.

If you would like to see more about the field of dreams movie site, visit their Facebook page at Field of Dreams Movie Site.  Sounds like a great place to visit if ever in Iowa, and they promise to have things back up running as good as new when the weather allows. I wish them well and continued success in their endeavor.

The Hump Day is Trump Day Blog: #ReleasetheMemo

1/24/2018

Picture
#ReleasetheMemo.  This hashtag is gaining more and more support on the social media site Twitter as citizens become enlightened about the travesty that has been happening within top echelons of the nation's government.  So, what is the "Memo" and what is it all about?

It starts with Devin Nunes,  the California Congressman who heads the House Intelligence Committee. Nunes has been the initiator of action to get to the bottom of the truth about why a Special Prosecutor was appointed to investigate the Trump Administration. And with the recent revelations about the Christopher Steele Russian dossier, a made up story funded by the Democratic National Committee and the clear malfeasance by some high level Justice Department and subordinate FBI officials, the entire basis for Robert Mueller's appointment may be false.  From the actions, or lack thereof, of both the former Attorney General and FBI Director, to holdover Obama Administration officials in both entities as well, it is clear that we have a major scandal on our hands just waiting to break wide open.

Part of the blame rests squarely on the back of the Fourth Estate, the media, which is supposed to report the news honestly and completely, not hide it from the reading and listening public.  And if this unfolding situation had the coverage that was given to Watergate, it would make Watergate look like a Sunday school picnic by comparison.

Congressman Nunes, a bird dog on the issue and one who has been subjected to threats and vile statements, has complied a memo containing key quotes from some of the Justice-released materials put together with identification of the sources and he plans to release the documents for the public to see.  Over two hundred Congressmen have reviewed the document privately and the general consensus is that the material is damning to those seeking the ouster of President Trump.  It makes all the sense in the world that our elected representatives should put this document up for a full review by the taxpayers who they are elected to represent.  And as more and more additional information comes out, it becomes abundantly clear that "something is rotten" in our Nation's Capital.

We have a Special Prosecutor, Robert Mueller,  a man appointed by an Obama supporter , Rob Rosenstein, who was also the career mentor for James Comey, the former FBI Director, investigating the duly elected President of the United States and claiming to be bi-partisan.  We also have the FBI's head of counterintelligence, Peter Strzok, and his mistress, Lisa Page, an FBI attorney, who messaged one another with anti-Trump rants who were serving on Mueller's team initially.  It doesn't take a genius to realize that what we have is a partisan set up and one which very likely is based on no valid reason for its initiation in the first place.

It is now time to #ReleasetheMemo and the other materials as they are reviewed and let the American people decide what's true and not.  A democratic republic cannot survive under a cloud of deep suspicion and possible outright tyranny.  And now that we have the FBI stating that many of their recorded records are missing (for five months right up to the day of Mueller's appointment). the stench is growing.  We will either operate this land as the democratic republic that it was constitutionally designed to be or it will be turned into a banana republic.  And it makes me ponder a thought that I never really wanted to entertain.  Is turning America into a banana republic just what the transformation of America was meant to be when Barack Obama began using the term nine years ago. After all, this rising scandal is just an extension of Fast and Furious (ATF gunrunning and the death of a Border Patrol agent), the IRS scandal (remember Lois Lerner and the use of tax rules against Conservative non-profits) and so many other similar actions that occurred in our recent past.

Honesty and transparency are the only ways to end this madness.  Open the records, let the chips fall as they may and deliver the truth.  Only the truth will clear this up and it is what is needed for America to be all that she can be.  And when the dust clears, I don't think it will be Donald Trump who will be leaving Washington.  I can't say the same about his detractors.

Is Our Home Our Castle?

1/23/2018

Picture
We've all heard the old saying that your home is your castle and it makes a lot of common sense.  We spend all day out in the world, doing what we must to support ourselves and our loved ones, but at the end of the day we look forward to returning to our home.  A good home is always where the heart is, a place where we can escape the rat race, where we can relax, rest and recuperate with the ones we love and friends of our choice.  It is a place where we can be ourselves and live our private lives knowing that we are safe, or at least it's supposed to be.

How many of us have been the victim of a home break-in?  It's a major disconcerting event, finding that even in our own personal space there are others who don't respect it.  And its impact is usually long lasting and, if not dealt with properly, can generate feelings of fear, anger and great stress, not to mention psychological scars.  Many find that they ultimately have to move after experiencing such an event, even if they loved the place where they lived before their misfortune.

No one has the right to enter your home uninvited (there are a few safety exceptions).  It's not a public space for all of society, it's your place and a place where you decide who can and cannot enter.  And that's as it should be, for we all need some privacy in this changing world of today and we need it in a place that is secure and allows true peace.

So, how does this differ, albeit on a much grander scale, from a sovereign nation deciding who can and can't gain entry into its territory.  The United States is the home of millions upon millions of citizens and shouldn't they be the primary concern of our leaders who were, after all, elected by these same citizens?  Just like you lock the doors to your house and decide who can come in and visit, a sovereign nation has the right to secure its borders and pick and choose who may enter, either temporarily or permanently. Uninvited guests have no right to enter your home and it makes sense that the same common sense should be applied to our national home as well.

I don't offer these comments as a criticism of any political party since there is plenty of blame to go around across the spectrum.  But these comments are a criticism of any entity that has destroyed the rule of law and is trying by whatever means to overturn the requirements for common sense, public safety, economic stability. and assimilation of those allowed to enter.  If we stuck by the rule of law that applied to alien situations in the wave years of days gone by $1880-1921), today we wouldn't have these problems in such abundance. We'd be attracting immigrants willing to go through the legal hoops and desirous of fully immersing themselves in what it means to be an American.

Some of you may not know that from 1924 to 1965 we had a very strict quota system designed to limit immigration and allow for those who had received citizenship in the prior busy years to fully enmesh themselves in America.  Only in 1965 did it change by law that came along at the same time as the Great Society. It was designed to open the doors wide to anyone and, as a result, we ended up with the disaster that we have today with nearly ninety percent of arrivals requiring American financial support.  So, it has become a burden, not a net plus and it involved new arrivals who have no desire to assimilate, instead creating their own little barrios and shanty towns in urban areas across the land and in many rural locales as well.

That said, I'll ask you one simple question as I close.  Are these the kinds of people that you want to invite into your home for dinner?  If not, should we be so anxious to make them wards of the state in America, using our tax money?  Each of us must answer that question ourselves.

Another Dog Shows His Smarts While Riding the Rails

1/22/2018

A no name dog trying to find his way home.
I think I should call this "Anything Goes Monday" since I got up this morning and had no idea what topic I would blog about.  But then I saw an article in the London Daily Express about a no name dog trying to find his way home and I knew I found my topic. I'm a dog lover and any time I find something which shows just how smart our canine friends really are, I'm hooked.

It is reported that the moderate-sized Doberman in question was seen exiting the British Rail train from Manchester at the Birmingham New Street Station.  Birmingham New Street links with Huddersfield, the place where the dog was micro-chipped, so it sure seems that the poor canine was trying to find his way back home. Unfortunately, the chip contained no owner's name or phone but it did have the contact information for the veterinary practice in Huddersfield where the chip was implanted. Authorities are awaiting a response from their query and, in the meantime, they also are using Facebook as a tool to reach them. Some 13,000 Facebook subscribers have used the social media site to put the word out to Huddersfield.

So, how did this poor pooch know to change get off in Birmingham and what caused his arrival by train there in the first place?  We may never know, but he has been sheltered in the interim while the search for his owners goes on.  He is a handsome and healthy, well taken care of dog, so whatever the outcome he is sure to ultimately have a good home, be it a new one or the one he came from.

I think the message here is much bigger than the story, however.  For this young dog has the sixth sense to find his way or at least begin to.  And we read frequently about a dog or cat carried across country by mistake who someone finds his way back home.  There was even a story during the California fires of a cat who had been lost for ten years being recovered by his former owners injured, but able to survive, from life outdoors all that time.  It's truly amazing how resilient they are.

Our animal friends are a lot smarter than we give them credit for and sometimes the sixth sense that they have and we lack gives them astounding abilities.  But when we make the decision to bring a dog into our lives, it is our responsibility to take care of them. Such things as a dog wandering onto a train should never happen in the first place, but when we give them the proper care, the love they return is priceless.

Dogs: Gifts from God and worthy of a good life.  Give them a good life and you'll have a good friend for life.

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN: God is Never Closed

1/20/2018

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.  Revelation 3:8 (ESV)

All the news is abuzz about the closure of the federal government.  People are gnashing their teeth, saying that some will starve, that emergency requirements will not be met and that disaster looms.  And it's really not surprising that so many believe this, for all day Friday most of the networks droned on and on about the issue with clocks counting down the time to disaster, the closure at midnight.

But yesterday morning just like clockwork, the sun came up, the birds started singing, the electricity ran to keep the heat on and to fix breakfast, yet some still think we are doomed.  I guess they don't realize that the government has had budgetary closures many times over the years and they are always described as insurmountable and claims abound that the stock market and the financial system will immediately crash, yet it doesn't happen.

So, why do so many of us put our hopes with mortal, fallible politicians?  After all, aren't they the ones who create the problem in the first place and don't they make the same mistakes over and over again?  And I get it, you can't have governance without political actions, hence politicians, but why do we think that they have the answers because they are just like us?  Like it or not, they and we are all miserable sinners.

I've got a better idea. Why not put your faith in God instead?  Turn your life over to him to be molded as He wants.  After all, as our Creator He is omnipotent, all knowing and all seeing, and He will guide us where he wants us to go if we let him.  And the result will be beyond our wildest dreams.

And as for politicians, regardless of party or view, we have to engage them to do what is right for our nation, not their own selfish desires.  And we can only effectively do this if we look at the issues from the perspective of God's wisdom. If we do that, we'll clearly be able to separate the "wheat from the chaff" in what they do.  And when they know that we understand what they do, be it good or bad, they will respond appropriately if they want to continue in their position.

We are God's and if we work for Him, all things are possible.  There isn't a government official, appointed or elected, who can match that.  Put Him to work for you today.  And as for the government shutdown, just relax, Monday will come and with God's body armor to protect us, we will weather whatever storm beckons. And perhaps offering a prayer for the politicians to come to their senses fairly and honestly will offer the power for them to finally realize they are also there to do God's work for us, not their self-centered desires.

Dear Lord, We thank you for the beauty and bounty that you have bestowed upon us and we ask that you infect our political leaders with your love.  Help them to do what is expected of them, find answers to problems rather than create more problems.  That they can only do if they open their hearts to you.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
