Now the people of Houston and surrounding parts of Texas, suffering from flooding the likes of which they had never seen, also experienced a major disaster of historic proportions which will take many, many years to recover from. But even there, notice of the storm's wrath which was coming was known at least a day or two ahead of time. Can you imagine watching TV at home when a helicopter with sound system passing overhead says to evacuate immediately. As was the case in California, there wasn't even time to gather anything as frightened residents evacuated with nothing more than the clothes on their back.
Today we have learned that as of this morning, the death toll stands at thirty one and over six hundred and forty are missing. And it's not over yet, with winds today gusting up to sixty miles per hour and very low humidity, the upcoming weekend is likely to be even more tragic.
Unfortunately, fires are a fact of life in California with the dry weather and strong winds common which are made even more dangerous in a brush covered terrain of hills and valleys and canyons literally serving as a wind tunnel to speed the spread of fire. What we don't know yet is exactly how the blazes started. If they were caused by man's own negligence, someone needs to pay dearly for the action which resulted, but that won't repair the lives, heal the wounded or bring back the dead. No, Californians likely need to look at how and where they build homes and heavily develop, for the current style with increasingly high population in otherwise remote areas makes it appear that they think they are invincible. Sadly, God's nature always proves us wrong on that point.
I hope everyone will say a prayer for those impacted and donate if you can to a worthy charity that will help. Evaluate them before donating, since some are much better than others, but do so if you can. We never know, sometimes each of us who has never faced such a life-changing event might need help ourselves. And we Americans have a reputation of being the best in the world when it comes to helping others. Let's continue that trend in this disaster like we have in the past. It's who we are and it has a lot to do with why we have been truly blessed as a nation for so long.
