Sheriff Darnell was wise to call on the Governor for assistance and the Governor responded quickly and decisively. Yes, even here in divided Florida we can find leaders who can work together when the crunch is on. And because of their smart action, college buildings weren't trashed, private businesses weren't looted, and no one was seriously harmed. Yes, it cost a lot of money for the protection, but government wastes lots of money on "feel good stuff" that accomplishes little. And safety of citizens is one of its paramount constitutional requirements.
For the most part, the students were controlled and realized the seriousness of what was taking place. The only thing I wish is that instead of yelling at Spencer during his appearance, they should have stood up, made an about face, and silently let him dispense his drivel. With a guy like Spencer you want to let him talk as much as he wants, for the more he says the more people realize it's not a message with anything positive to offer. Just think how much more impact that approach would have accomplished instead of people standing and yelling at a free speech rally. It would have been much more effective and it would have not afforded Spencer the opportunity to use the videos to his advantage later.
But why did the actions taken in Gainesville work so well? Because everyone knew that the police were there to keep the peace, unlike places like Charlottesville and Berkeley where the police were ordered by politicians to stand down and allow the violence to take place. I don't know what the true agenda of those politicians was and is but I do know this: PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH WORKS. And Gainesville in the Great State of Florida was a beautiful example of just that yesterday.
