A devout practicing Muslim, the President met the day prior with a group of Coptic Christians in a Christian church and told them that he wanted them to feel safe and secure in the country where they have lived for centuries. Furthermore, he stated that all mankind, regardless of religion should be able to live together as brothers in a society where all could be productive and better themselves.
He continued on this theme in his meeting with Muslim clerics at the university, telling them that it is inconceivable that a religion that is followed by 1.6 billion people worldwide would endorse killing the remaining population of approximately 5.4 billion world citizens because they did not share their religious doctrine. The President went on to tell them that the problem was one of wrong thinking by radicals since there are millions of Muslims worldwide who have assimilated into their societies without bloodshed and violence.
I find President el-Sisi's words both encouraging and important since he heads the largest Muslim nation in the world. Hopefully, people of common sense and decency will answer his call in the Muslim community. There is no reason that people of all faiths and color can't live peacefully together. They just need to keep evil out of their hearts and replace it with love.
You will recall that el-Sisi is the same man who was the head of the Egyptian Army and led the ouster of Mohamed Morsi, the man who was so strongly supported by Barack Obama when he was elected President after Arab Spring. But Morsi didn't believe in democracy, he merely used it as a tool to bring the Muslim Brotherhood to power with the result being a continued onslaught of violence and bloodshed against his opposition in Egypt.
We all must remember that Adolph Hitler came to power the same way and he led Germany down a similar path to tyranny that, unfortunately, had no counterpush by someone like el-Sisi. We all must continually guard against would be false freedom lovers who want to use citizens for their own evil ends.
So I think that the effort by President el-Sisi is a legitimate step to bring Egypt toward modern times as a peaceful and productive nation. Her people are returning to a normal way of life and their economy is improving. el-Sisi is doing what he promised in his inaugural and that includes elimination of internal terror and chaos by those with an evil purpose so that Egypt might thrive. And it brings up a big question: Why was Barack Obama so supportive of Morsi and the Brotherhood and today fails to support the work of the Egyptian government. That's a question that must be left to each individual to make for him or herself.
As for my position, I think we are witnessing in Egypt a real Arab Spring, the spring back of a decent life and future for the Egyptian people. We should be thankful that a rational and reasonably man like el-Sisi is in place to do so. I hope he succeeds, for his efforts coupled with the Israeli efforts to combat terror bring hope to a troubled Middle East. May God be with both nations as they strive to exist in a troubled region.
