The picture of a mushroom cloud taken from the skies above Japan as America took decisive action to end World War II is probably the perfect symbol for doom. After all, thousands of people suddenly died with no warning while thousands more were seriously wounded, some carrying horrific scars for the rest of their lives and many more lives just disappeared, never to be fully accounted for. But the fear and the horror that was experienced that day is a good representation of what many feel when they are living in fear of a world that has in so many ways gone mad.
Terrorist butchers roam the Middle East killing anyone who doesn't bow down and support them, using the most horrible methods that an evil mind can create. New diseases seem to be sweeping the world while leaders of nations seem powerless, sometimes even disinterested to the pain and suffering that they are creating. Families fall apart and people succumb to immoral temptations that ruin lives for a moment of what is thought to be pleasure but leads to such pain. It is a cold and often heartless world and many actually feel that mankind is doomed, that we can't return to a better way and won't even try. Some even say this is the beginning of the end as the Book of Revelation reveals, but we don't know and Jesus told us we will not know when that day will come, only that we must be ready.
But no matter how fearful we are, we should not feel doomed. Instead, we should look to the one true source of light, The Holy Trinity consisting of Our Father, the Lord Almighty, His son Jesus Christ who came to earth to save us and The Holy Spirit, who was sent to us by Jesus after his Ascension to the side of the Father to serve as our moral compass and guide. We are not alone, folks, not if we turn our hearts to Him and accept His love and grace. If we do that, the feeling of doom that so many of us feel will be lifted and replaced with the bright light of salvation.
As the Psalmist said, He will take our fears away and he will give us the strength to go on no matter what the remainder of our life on earth requires. And when our day is done, the Glory of life eternal at the side of the Father and in the presence of our Savior promises to be something so wonderful and so beautiful that we can't even imagine it within the limits of the human mind. So take the fear and gloom and doom out of your heart and open it to His majesty. After all, He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Live for and with Him always.
Dear Lord: Thank you for the grace and love you have shown us, mere mortal sinners, by sending your Son, Our Savior Jesus Christ, to death on the Cross so that we might have the opportunity to escape the chains of gloom, doom and fear and experience real and lasting life. And thank you also for sending the Holy Spirit to be with us as our guide and counselor in making the decisions in life that you would have us make. Be with us, keep us strong no matter what befalls us and guide us in leading a life that is pure, honest and which always puts you first and foremost in all that we do. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, Amen.
Thanks be to God.
